You may have heard that we had a pretty cold night Sunday/Monday. What is a fruit farmer to do? We don’t have a wind tower, but it’s best to do something! We got up at 2am to light many small fires in the lower area of the orchard and around varieties that bloom early. We kept the fires going until the sun started to warm things up around 7am.

Today I checked buds to see the damage. Cut open the flower buds and if there is any brown inside the little bud, those buds are dead. The silly dead bud still opens like a healthy flower but will not make an apple.

The results are in and there was a lot of damage but still plenty of green buds for a crop. But hey it’s not even May so more cold could come - ouch!

Busy days on the farm getting ready the growing season! The orchard is so neat and tidy after pruning is done and the prunings are all shredded.
Buds are starting to burst with a little peek of green on the Zestar. We are grafting over some varieties onto the roots of others. Prescribed burns in prairie and oak savanna continue to give the native species a little advantage.
We plan to have a couple days this year for an orchard tour, so stay tuned.

Hey numbers/tax folks! MHFM needs a little help to make the market stronger and better going unto 2026.

We (the farmers market) are hoping to incorporate for tax purposes.

Are there any CPAs who would be willing to do some pro-bono work to file needed paperwork and prepare our annual tax filings?

Hey Apple Crunchers, time to close the books on our 2025 season. The farmstore is shut for the season. It felt like a quick one! Thanks to everyone helping get those organic apples grown, picked, sorted and sold. Kristoff, Jackie, Franklin, Jacob, Kyle, Leanne and John all made the season good smoothly and get tasty organic apples from the tree to the apple crunchers mouth. Mission accomplished!
A question I get from folks this time of year is what do you do in the off season? Work on our prairie and savanna, repair or improve machinery, prune the orchard, CLEAN UP THE SHOP, plan for 2026, education thyself on one’s profession, read?!, take a trip and more! Happy Winter.

It’s 6am do you know where your fresh, crisp, crunchy organic apples are? Atoms to Apples is at Dane County Farmers Market, Westside Community today - Saturday. Check us out at Monroe Street Farmers Market on Sunday, and at the farmstore everyday 8-6. Varieties just picked are Liberty, Nova Spy, Crimsoncrisp, Honeycrisp, Zabergau Reinette, Sweet 16, Triumph, Harrow Sweet Pears.

We are waiting for ripening of our next varieties. The farmstore is looking pretty cleaned out, so delay that trip to Friday or this weekend when we will be stocked up with all the farm goodness.

Great stuff in the farmstore now. Zestar, Honeycrisp, Sansa, Williams Pride and of course fresh cider. And the answer to the question “what’s in the hoophouse?” - peaches! These will go quick some come out and grab ‘em. As always, open 8-6 everyday.
