SHEARING DAY on the farm -- bright and early, we started dodging rain showers (because wet sheep are NOT ideal for shearing). It was hot and humid, so the sheep had to be a little happy about getting those heavy wool coats off just in time for the approaching hot, summer temperatures. Special thanks to Ian Wuscher for doing such a great job shearing today. Thankful to have this done for another year!

The HOMESTRETCH....these last two ewes held out so long that we had nearly decided they weren't going to have lambs this year. But lo and behold, 2 weeks with not a thing happening and then....On April 13 (Papa's birthday), Juliette surprised us with the birth of a big ole white boy weighing 11.8 #. It was a no-brainer that we would call this little fella Bob.
The next day, on April 14....one month and 4 days after the birth of our first lamb this season...Suzette gave birth to the last lamb of the 2024 lambing season. Since Suzette holds the title of Supreme Grand Champion, we were happy to see that her lamb was a beautiful little white girl, weighing 9.9 #. We named her Maisie.

March 28 brought us another double whammy. Halle gave us a big single black boy weighing in at 9.2 #. Since we're planning a trip to the Hoover Dam, we decided HOOVER sounded like a good name for him. Later that day, Opal did her part by having twins, a black boy at 8.2 # and a tiny black girl at 5.6 #. PaPa thought we should name them Jack and Jill, and so we did.

On 3/22, Dinah won the prize for having the largest lamb of 2024. This single white girl that we named Lottie tipped the scales at 12.0 #. Dinah also officially filled our nursery to overflowing that night. We had to make a temporary overflow pen. But the fun didn't stop...even though we were out of room, Alice decided she couldn't wait another day. Let me just stop right here and say that we had been waiting nearly 2 years for Alice to have a lamb. She and our ram, AI, are our registered CVM sheep that we bought in Pennsylvania a couple of years ago. Imagine our excitement when we saw that Alice had given birth to twins on 3/23. One identical to her and one identical to AI, the ram with the same white triangle on his head. But, NO, they were both boys 😭. We wanted so much to finally expand our CVM line, but it's not to be this year. Oh well...these are still handsome boys! Hatter, named after the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland was definitely the BIG brother at 11.5 #. Louis, named after the author of Alice in Wonderland, is the cute runt at 7.5 #. With this birth, we also got desperate for nursery space, so we had to convert one of the pasture shelters into a satellite nursery.

Let's catch up! It's been a while since we've posted, but that doesn't mean the fun and excitement of lambing came to a stop. We were just a little on the busy side 😉... On March 21, we had 2 first-time mommas to go. Kennedy started us off that morning with a set of twins, a black boy weighing 9.6 # and a black girl weighing 8.0 #. Mona is one of our more nervous ewes, so it was unfortunate that she decided to give birth to triplets way out in the middle of the pasture where it was difficult to catch her. Being a first-time momma, triplets weren't ideal, and they were born very small. Sadly, two did not make it, but the biggest of the three at 6.2 #, survived. Although she started out small, Xena, one of my favorites, is a beauty and is growing into a fine silver lamb.

Last year, Norma's baby was stillborn, and she was devastated. Maternal feelings run deep in all species. Needless to say, we were all excited to see the birth of twin girls this year! They are beauties...a solid black and the first gray/brown that we've had this year. Norma is a natural when it comes to mothering; she watches her babies like a hawk and immediately calls to them when they stray too far away. These two lambs have special names like so many of the others. Their mother, Norma, was named after my great uncle Norman because she was born on his birthday. He was the kindest, most wonderful man, but unfortunately he died a couple of years ago. He would have been 100 years old last week. In honor of him, these girls are named Ferndown, "Fern" (the village in England where he lived) and Bluebell (his and my aunt's favorite flower).

Nessie was not to be outdone. She too had twins the very next day on 3/16, but hers were almost half the size and had a lot more variety in color. The little ram lamb, named Busby, was solid black and the biggest of the two at 7.2 #. The tiny white ewe lamb weighed only 4.9 #. Her name is Bonnyrigg...Bonny for short. They are small, but they are mighty! What's up with the names? This line gets all Scottish names. The mom's name, Nessie, comes from Loch Ness. Busby and Bonnyrigg are villages in Scotland, the country where my mom was born.
