One of Butcher Branch Angus’ consignments for the Southeast Bull Expo this coming weekend!

BBA Legend 804 is a bull to take a hard look at. Out of a first calf heifer by Active Duty by VAR Legend, he sure checks a lot of boxes. Most impressively he posted an adjusted weaning weight of 812 lbs and an actual yearling weight of 1240 lbs. This bull expresses great length and depth of rib as well. Look for offspring to do the same.

Corey did a great job videoing this…

It’s Calving Season
When we say, “It’s calving season”, there are lots of things that need to be done on a daily basis. We try and check our herds at least once a day, lots of times twice. While checking, we count cows, check existing calves to make sure they are healthy, check for signs of labor.
Once a cow has had her calf, we need to catch it to weigh it, tag it, take a DNA sample and check to see if it is a bull or heifer.
This video will show you how we do those 4 things…video credit to my daughter 😁

Our second pair consigned to the North Carolina Angus Association Spring Fever Sale is BBA Boulder 609, a Tehama Tahoe daugher with a Mogck Entice heifer calf a side. 609’s pedigree is loaded with maternal sires like Image Maker and MCC Daybreak and her EPDs show strong maternal value with a $M in the top 2% and a $W in the top 4%.
The mating with Entice added a ton of carcass value to this calf’s EPDs with ribeye and marbling now in the top 20% and all $ indexes in the top 25% with most being in the top 10%.
She sells as Lot 4 and 4A

This is the first of two pairs we will be consigning to the NC Angus Association Spring Fever Sale.
BBA BOULDER 616 is a Jet Black Daughter, AI’d to Deer Valley Growth Fund, with a SS Enforcer heifer calf at side.
She post 18/28 EPD/$Indexes in the top 25% of the breed. Her daughter BBA Boulder 808 posts a $M index in the top 5% with added ribeye as well.
These female’s pedigrees come stacked with maternal powerhouses such as 878, Image Maker and Black Granite. Look for these to carry on the tradition.
Lot 5 and 5A

We will have some purebred and angus influenced open heifers for sale at the March Madness Cattle sale in Chester SC on March 13th. These heifers are out of a Baldridge Jennings son we raised a few years back out of one of our top producing angus cows. Lots of maternal value in the pedigrees.

Make sure you check out the lineup of cattle in the March Madness Sale in Chester SC on March 13, 2021. There will be a solid group of open and bred females that will add value to any herd and a good group of breeding age bulls.
Pictured is BBA Southern Charm 706. He is a purebred Black Angus out of the now deceased Bub’s Southern Charm back to a VAR Generation daughter. With an adjusted weaning weight of 706 lbs, this bull should add pounds to any group of calves.
As a bonus he posts a rib-eye EPD in the top 10% and a marbling EPD in the top 25%. All with an Energy EPD in check.
He sells March 13, 2021

Another day...another baby!
Welcome to this little heifer calf! And a big thank you to her momma, 616, who was gracious enough to let me get so close this morning! These cows have been born and raised here on our farm and have learned to trust us since day 1. This makes raising cattle so much easier on us here. Michael Wyatt

Sure hate the pandemic cancelled the NC Angus Association’s Spring Fever Sale. This fall pair was going to be one of Butcher Branch’s consignments. A Hoover Dam daughter, AI bred to SS Enforcer, with her Deer Valley Growth Fund heifer calf at side. Michael Wyatt

Homeschooling 101. Learning how to grown his own food.

I snapped this picture this evening while out feeding. This is a Generation daughter we bought from Scarlett Farms 1 1/2 years ago as an open heifer. We brought her home and bred her to Bub’s Southern Charm. September 14th she had this bull calf unassisted with an 83 lb. birthweight and bred back AI in December. The bull calf is still 2 weeks away from his 205 day weigh in. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two.

03/10/2020
If you are looking for some nice purebred commercial angus females, please take a look at our consignments at the UCCA March Madness sale this Saturday, March 14th. We will have two heavy bred spring calving heifers and three open 15 month old heifers.
If you have any questions feel free to let us know.

#funfactfriday The cows here at Butcher Branch Angus eat 15-20 round bales of hay each week, depending on the weather! Here is a little video for your enjoyment... There is always something new for me to learn on the farm. This week, I learned how to operate the tractor and put a round bale of hay into a hay ring. (When your brother asks if you know how to drive a tractor and you say no....then he says, “well you are going to learn today”.....you just do it.) So for all of you out there wondering....you can teach an old dog new tricks!

#meetthefarmmonday Meet our newest member to the herd...a bull calf out of a bull named Tehama Tahoe! His mom is one of our original 4, #207. Welcome little one! Looks like he is enjoying his bath from his mom 🚿

#meetthefarmmonday Corey This was an interesting interview! I had no idea what her answers would be....and some of them aren’t entirely true...lol

#funfactfriday Fact is....it takes a team effort to keep this operation going! We couldn’t do it without all of our help! Randy Edwards Colton Edwards

#meetthefarmmonday “Petey” Today’s #meetthefarmmonday is on my boy, Petey. He is an Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler. He is bred to move livestock by biting their heels. I have had Petey since the day he was born. His dad, a beautiful Red Heeler, was my dog in college. Petey was out of his 2nd litter. Petey was 14 years old this past June, and still has the spunk of a young dog! About a year ago, he started having seizures (holy smokes....scary for me). I took him to our vet in Mount Pleasant who did several test on him. They never determined the cause, but put him on seizure meds to reduce the amount and severity. It has worked, because during the last year he has only had 1 seizure! He has never been trained to work livestock, but he definitely has the drive to do so! He is my number 1 protector! He keeps me safe from anything that may be a threat....like the UPS man, neighbors, cows, or whatever he deems a threat. Thanks for all you do for us, Petey! We love you!

#funfactfriday Fact is...there is some type of weather headed our way, and we have done all we can to prepare to keep each and every animal and person we have here, SAFE! It seems that each weather channel has a different opinion of how much rain or wind we may receive...so we will sit and wait for whatever we may get. I will keep everyone updated throughout the weekend and please everyone take proper precautions to keep you, your family and your animals safe. We believe that the good Lord put us on this earth to help take care of his animals and we must do it to the best of our ability! Thanks for taking time out of your day to read our posts and keep everyone in the path of #Hurricaneflorence in your prayers!

#funfactfriday “Fence Line Weaning” When we wean calves, here at Butcher Branch Angus, we do what we call, fence line weaning. This keeps the level of stress on the cows and calves at a minimum.

Mowing hay today at the farm. One good thing about this 91* day and the other 90+’s coming up....it will dry the hay more quickly ☀️ 🔥 🕶

#meetthefarmmonday “Not For Hire” If there was ever a question of who I would want on my team, Dad would be my first choice! He likes to act like all the things we need help with are bothersome to him, but truth be told...he loves it and he is going to be there and be EARLY! Dad is a “jack of all trades”. He is the best head gate operator this side of the Mississippi, and I would put him up against any of the guys who do it for a living. I have seen him catch a cow who is running down the alley, who decides to leap through the squeeze chute. He will stop them mid air, while I am standing back, holding my breath, thinking this will be the one who gets away! At this point, in his career at Butcher Branch Angus, he has a 100% catch rate. He has worked in the 90+* heat, below freezing, pouring rain and thunderstorms. He has also ruined numerous shirts and jeans when an agitated cow begins swishing her tail and slinging poo his way. He always does it with a smile on his face and a commentary to make us laugh! Thanks Dad ( Randy Edwards) for everything you do! We appreciate you more than you know!
