The Blue Ridge Community College Agriculture Business program is growing! This summer we are offering three hands-on agriculture classes that will be outstanding. These classes are intensive, 4 or 5 day classes with meetings in-person and include visits to farms and agribusinesses or laboratories. AGR 141, Introduction to Animal Science, will meet June 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 with follow-up online assignments. AGR 142, Introduction to Plant Science and Technology, will meet July 7, 8, 9, 10 with follow up assignments. AGR 295, Topics in Ag. Mechanics is offered in two different locations, and meets June 18, 19, 22, 23 in Harrisonburg or June 22,23,24,25,26 in Pulaski County. This class covers basic agriculture mechanics to include woodworking, electricity, plumbing, concrete work and welding with follow-up on-line assignments. All of our summer classes meet from 8:00-4:00. This is a good chance to either work on degree and certificate work or take a class just for personal interest. Starview Farms will return to the Saturday Fairfax Farmers Market again this year. This will be our 8th year at the market. We will have pasture raised beef available, along with lamb, pasture raised eggs, honey and Baker Pork from our friend, Steve Baker. We work with our neighbors to bring high quality, local products to our friends. We've been raising and finishing cattle since 1985. Our cattle are never confined and always have free range on pasture. Our steers are all born in Augusta County, Virginia. We do feed some grain as they grow. We've been busy over winter, working on our barn and are ready to start the market season! Stop by and say hi when you are at the market. We love meeting people and talking about agriculture. This weekend is Father's Day weekend and Starview Farm's has just what you need for cooking outside, smoking meat, or slow cooking! This week Beef Short Ribs are on sale for $1.00 off per pound! That means that you can get meaty short ribs for $6.99/lb! We'll have some free recipes on hand for you to try! We also have plenty of Sirloin Tip Steaks, London Broils and Chuck Roasts too so that you can fix that special meal! Of course we have plenty of ground beef patties and all of Baker's Pork products available. Also, lamb is back and we will have Leg of Lamb, Lamb Shoulders, Ground Lamb, Shanks and Kabob meat too! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
The pastures are starting to green, the steers are happy and Spring is just around the corner! Starview Farms will be delivering pre-orders to The Shoppes Parking Lot, 10409 Main Street, Fairfax, Saturday, March 29th, with pickup being between 9-10:00 a.m. This will be the last delivery before the Fairfax Market opens May 10th. Please see the attached order form to see what we have available. Just to note in time for Easter, we have lamb legs and shoulders as well as beef briskets available. Please order these early as we have a limited supply. This month, we are offering Bone-In Beef Chuck Roasts on sale again for $6.99/lb. Chucks are great for smoking, roasting, slow cooking or cutting for stew. Check out Nancy's recipes on our website! Please note that we are increasing the price of our free range eggs to $7.00/dozen. We don't like increasing prices but think we have to in order to remain able to produce them. Another Snowy Morning in Mt. Solon!
We hope this note finds you well! It looks like Phil (the groundhog) did not see his shadow which means 6 more weeks of winter weather! Based on the forecast for February, it looks like he is right!
