July 4th
Today was hard. Today we lost a horse that started as a conversation starter for 2 friends.
Laura did CANTER listings on Saturdays at Beulah. She would say - “I have my mints for sunny sunshine. “Her eyes sparkling.
She would laugh and she would go home and network the hell outta that 15 hand red mare.
One day it wasn’t laughter. No hits on Sunny.
Trainer said going today. Laura was panicked. A few moments later- a deal made and Sunny took a stroll to the other side of Beulah in my husbands barn.
She found a home with a lady that ran a church camp and wanted her for her daughter. Laura vetted the lady. Sunny left in a big box stall in a Tapps transport trailer. Updates were promised.
Updates were given but no photos. Then we saw a story about this woman who was a hoarder. Dancing cloud rescue had stepped up for the horses. ( the ones that survived)
We reached out to the rescue and Laura was able to bring her home. After a bit Laura wanted to switch barns. She asked if Sunny and a friends horse could stay for 2 weeks at my place while they looked for someplace closer.
That was over 10 years ago:)
Sunny was always worried about her dinner.
I told Laura one day when I was feeding I was worried because Sunny’s stall was quiet. She was at her feed tub patiently waiting for her dinner. Her eyes saying “I know you won’t forget me”
That was a unbelievable day for me. Her trust has been restored.
She was a super cute mover, smooth as silk.
Smart as a whip. She had trouble keeping a leg that had an old wire injury from stocking up though.
After a couple vet trips we figured out how to manage it.
Laura would say she wanted to lease Sunny or perhaps rehome her, but no home was good enough. So she stayed. Her leg worsened over the years each flair worse than previous.
She was retired from riding and joined another retired mare.
Laura provided anything she needed or wanted.
I have huge respect for her because Laura didn’t ride. Any other person would have let her go.
She didn’t - She made a promise to that girl and saw it through to the absolute end.
Sunny was euthanized peacefully July 4th.
It was a holiday but I felt cruel to make her stand on the leg that had flared the day before.
Laura will have her cremated and when she decides it’s time .Sunny will return to our farm.
Most of my long time boarders know I love their horses. I do not make a secret of it.
I also love my boarders. This care giving is always a team effort. Like I have always told my kids “ You can never have to many people who truly love you.”
Horses are the same.
Miss Sunny- I hope you are running with no pain. In a green endless field with Sissy, where it is not too cold or too hot and of course no flies.
I also hope there is endless peppermints.
Til we meet again💕🦋
