Today's Bourbon Spotlight:
Never Say Die Bourbon. It's a unique, transatlantic-aged Kentucky straight bourbon that famously crosses the Atlantic Ocean to be finished in England.
The BackstoryThe brand gets its name from a foal born in Kentucky in the early 1950s that was declared lifeless at birth. Revived with a shot of bourbon, the horse was named "Never Say Die" and went on to win the 1954 Epsom Derby in England against 33-to-1 odds.
Distillation & Initial Aging: It is distilled in Kentucky and aged in American Oak for about 5 to 6 years.
The Ocean Voyage: The barrels are shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, spending about six weeks on a cargo ship. The temperature fluctuations during the voyage help open and close the wood, drawing out more flavor.
Final Maturation: The barrels rest for over a year at White Peak Distillery in Derbyshire, England, where the cooler climate gently rounds out the whiskey before bottling.
