#12 is holding out to the last day possible.
When she drops, that will be the last day of calving season.

Breeding starts in a month. Everyone gets the same opportunity so it’s better to calve early to get extra recovery.

What a difference a year can make!

She almost died last year, made a rebound, got bred, and raised a heifer.

Now she has an awesome looking bull calf on her side!

Their job is to bring in a calf once a year. She did it, with odds against her, when several others didn’t.

Got home in time to tag a couple of new calves.
Dad insists I stay on top of that to make it easier for him to spot new calves.
Calving season is winding down. Just a handful to go. The target end date is 5-15. Still have a couple holding on.
Had one death loss on Monday. Not sure the cause. I hate it but it happens.

I kept the yearling heifers back to replace the cows that didn’t calve.

I run a tough management system and several don’t make it in the program.
The two year old heifers that didn’t calve sell as grass finished beef.
The older cows fill the Workaholic beef stick market.

These hens have been hanging together the last couple of years. They have shown up with their chicks in the beginning of summer the last two years. They had a smaller hatch than the year before.
One has a 6” beard, I wouldn’t take her during season if it had a chance.

I’d like to see the flocks of the late 90’s in this area. It was common to see a group of 40 birds, now a flock of 20 is significant.

Had a couple more bull calves. Not sure what happened but that’s 9 in a row.

Had another F1 cross (Wangus) calf out of 248. Every day has its surprises.

We saved this heifer from a winter storm. Took her in to grandmas basement and dried her off. The damage was done. She was out of a purchased cow. Changing calving to 3/15-5/15 avoids freezing and too much heat. Fits our program and the calves are healthy.
