Harvested an entire dehydrator full of garlic chives this morning. This should supply us with a dry form of this delicious herb for the rest of the year.

Spent some time working on a more permanent home for the rabbits yesterday. This hutch will be for the two doe's. I have to pick up a few more materials to finish it and build a solo hutch for the buck.

We officially added rabbits to the farm yesterday! This has been a goal of mine for a couple of years and I was finally able to make it happen. Three rabbits a buck and two doe's, all right at 4 months old. These guys will supply us with a much needed source of fertilizer as well as a renewable source of meat for the freezer. I couldn't be more excited!

Well with my neighbors help we got the lake dirt moved into the north garden. We put down a layer of alfalfa from an old half rotten bail first. Tomorrow I will be putting down a layer of old leaves before I rake the lake dirt out over the rest of the garden. After that I will run the tiller over it one more time to mix everything together.

With the drought that has plagued the Texas hill country this year not much grew in our gardens. However that doesn't mean i didn't have gardens on the brain most of the summer. And as luck would have it one of the lakes at work almost completely dried up so we took the opportunity to have it cleaned out. Its been 12 years since it was cleaned out. I was lucky enough to be able to bring home nearly 35 cubic yards of silt that was cleaned out of the lake bottom. It has a few rocks but mostly it is amazing rich fertile soil with only a very small amount of clay. I will be adding all of this soil on top of both my gardens for next year. I am also changing some other things in the garden. More posts to show the progress will follow. Here is a picture of my north garden that i just finished turning over and some of the dirt that will be going on top of it.

With the drought we have had this year these blackberries have had a rough time of it. So we decided to try an experiment with bare rooting. We packed them as best we could with wet peat moss and wraped them in packing paper before bagging them and putting them in a box for storage. We will see if this works next year.

If you have chickens you probably know what its like to have more eggs then you know what to do with. You may sell some but if your chickens are like mine you probably cant sell them or give them away fast enough to make room in the refrigerator. So what do you do with them? Well you can feed them to your cats and dogs. You can put them in the garden as nutrients for the plants. Be sure you break the egg when doing this or you will end up with stink mines in the garden. 🤣🤣🤣 Another thing you can do is boil them and feed them back to the chickens. I use an instant pot to hard boil them and then use a pastry cutter to crush them up. You want to crush them up so you dont inadvertently start an egg eating habit. The eggs are a good source of protein and the shells and an excellent source of calcium.
