Welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week whiskey education series at Jack's Package Store.

This week, we're exploring one of the world's most approachable whiskey styles: Irish whiskey.

If you've ever described a whiskey as smooth, there's a good chance it was Irish.

But that reputation isn't just marketing—it comes from the way many Irish whiskeys are made.

Like the other styles we've covered, Irish whiskey has legally protected production standards that define what can—and can't—be called Irish whiskey.

One of the things that makes the category unique is its four official styles: Single Malt, Single Pot Still, Single Grain, and Blended. Of those, Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is uniquely Irish and is considered one of the country's greatest contributions to the whiskey world.

Many Irish distilleries are also known for triple distillation, which often produces a lighter, cleaner spirit than double distillation. While not every Irish whiskey is triple distilled, the practice has helped shape the category's reputation for approachability.

Just like Scotch, Irish whiskey is typically matured in previously used casks, often ex-bourbon or sherry barrels. Those casks add layers of flavor without the stronger oak influence that comes from the new charred barrels required for bourbon.

The result is a whiskey that often showcases notes of honey, orchard fruit, vanilla, toasted grain, gentle spice, and soft oak—though every bottle has its own personality.

When it’s hot outside, the best wines usually have one thing in common: they feel refreshing.

For a warm summer evening, look for wines that are light, crisp, and easy to drink. A little acidity is your friend; it gives wine that bright, mouthwatering quality that makes you want another sip. Think citrus, green apple, peach, melon, fresh berries, or subtle floral notes instead of heavy oak, big tannins, or overly rich flavors.

Welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week whiskey education series at Jack's Package Store.

This week, we're exploring one of the most iconic whiskey styles in the world: Scotch whisky.

For many people, the word Scotch immediately brings one thing to mind:

Smoke.

And while some Scotches are famously smoky, that stereotype only tells part of the story.

Scotch is one of the most diverse whiskey categories in existence. It can be bright and fruity, rich and sherried, light and floral, sweet and honeyed, or bold, peaty, and intensely smoky.

One of the biggest reasons for that diversity is something we've never encountered in this series before: the barrel.

So far we've learned that bourbon and rye must be aged in new charred oak barrels. Scotch is different.

Most Scotch matures in used casks—often barrels that previously held bourbon, sherry, port, wine, rum, or other spirits. Those barrels contribute their own character, creating an incredible range of flavors that simply aren't possible with new oak alone.

Where a whisky is made in Scotland also plays a role. Different regions have earned reputations for different styles, but think of them as helpful guides rather than strict rules. The distillery, the cask, and the blender often have just as much influence as geography.

Whether you're just beginning your whiskey journey or looking to branch out from bourbon, Scotch has a bottle for almost every palate.

Welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week whiskey education series at Jack’s Package Store.

This week, we’re talking about one of the newest officially recognized American whiskey categories: American Single Malt Whiskey.

If bourbon is known for corn and rye is known for spice, American Single Malt is all about malted barley.

Single malt whiskey is most famously associated with Scotland, but American distillers have been building their own version of the style for years. Now, American Single Malt has its own official identity in the United States.

To be called American Single Malt Whiskey, it must follow a few key rules:

🥃 Made from 100% malted barley
🇺🇸 Mashed, distilled, and matured in the United States
🏭 Distilled entirely at one U.S. distillery
🪵 Matured in oak casks no larger than 700 liters
🔥 Distilled at no more than 160 proof
🥃 Bottled at no less than 80 proof

Unlike bourbon, American Single Malt does not have to use new charred oak barrels. That gives distillers room to explore used barrels, new oak, toasted oak, sherry casks, wine casks, beer casks, and finishing styles.

Common notes can include honey, toasted grain, malt, biscuit, vanilla, cocoa, dried fruit, apple, oak, baking spice, nuts, and smoke.

The biggest flavor lever is the barley itself, but the barrel matters too. New oak can bring vanilla, caramel, and spice. Used barrels can let more malt character shine. Sherry or wine casks can add fruit, richness, and depth.

American Single Malt is a great category for bourbon drinkers who want to branch out without jumping straight into Scotch, and for Scotch drinkers who want to explore American malted barley.

Happy Independence Day, and welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week whiskey education series at Jack’s Package Store.

This week, we’re talking about one of the most historic American whiskey styles: rye whiskey.

Before bourbon became America’s most famous whiskey, rye was already being distilled by early American farmers, especially in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and the Mid-Atlantic. Rye grew well in cooler northern climates, so it became a natural grain choice for early whiskey makers.

That makes rye a perfect bottle to highlight on the Fourth of July: it is one of America’s original whiskey traditions.

So what makes rye whiskey different?

In the U.S., rye whiskey must follow a few key rules:

🌾 Made from at least 51% rye grain
🪵 Aged in new charred oak barrels
🔥 Distilled at no more than 160 proof
🛢️ Barreled at no more than 125 proof
🥃 Bottled at no less than 80 proof

Those rules are similar to bourbon, but the grain changes everything.

Where bourbon is usually rich, sweet, and rounded, rye is often bolder, drier, spicier, and more structured.

Common rye whiskey flavors include:

Black pepper
Baking spice
Cinnamon
Clove
Mint
Herbs
Oak
Citrus
Vanilla
Sometimes dill or grassy notes

Welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week whiskey education series at Jack’s Package Store.

This week, we’re breaking down one of America’s most iconic whiskey styles: bourbon.

A lot of people associate bourbon with Kentucky, and for good reason. Kentucky has a deep bourbon history and produces many of the most recognizable bottles on the shelf. But bourbon does not have to be made in Kentucky.

To be called bourbon, it must follow a few key rules:

🥃 Made in the United States
🌽 Made from at least 51% corn
🪵 Aged in new charred oak barrels
🔥 Distilled at no more than 160 proof
🛢️ Barreled at no more than 125 proof
🥃 Bottled at no less than 80 proof

Those rules create the foundation, but they do not make every bourbon taste the same.

Flavor can change based on the mash bill, barrel char, aging time, proof, warehouse location, blending, and whether the bourbon is finished in another type of barrel. Corn brings sweetness and body. Rye can add spice. Wheat can make bourbon softer and rounder. New charred oak brings much of the color and flavor, adding notes of vanilla, caramel, toast, and oak.

In general, bourbon is known for flavors like caramel, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, baking spice, toasted wood, and sometimes darker notes like leather, to***co, or dried fruit.

So where does Tennessee whiskey fit?

Tennessee whiskey is closely related to bourbon and follows many of the same basic standards, but it is known for charcoal mellowing, often called the Lincoln County Process. That extra step can soften the whiskey and influence the final flavor.

Think of it this way:

Tennessee whiskey is bourbon’s close cousin.
Similar foundation. Different tradition.

So let’s start with the foundation:

What makes whiskey… whiskey?

At its core, whiskey is a distilled spirit made from grain, aged in wood, and bottled at a chosen proof.

The basic process:
✅ Grain is selected — corn, rye, barley, wheat, or a combination.
✅ Fermentation — yeast converts grain sugars into alcohol.
✅ Distillation — concentrates alcohol and shapes flavor.
✅ Barrel aging — oak adds color, aroma, texture, and character.
✅ Proofing & bottling — whiskey may be diluted or bottled at higher proof.

While the process is similar worldwide, the details create very different styles:
