🥃 KNOW YOUR POUR: CANADIAN WH**KY 101

Welcome back to Know Your Pour, our 12-week wh***ey education series at Jack's Package Store.

This week, we're heading north for a category that's often overlooked—and frequently misunderstood: Canadian wh**ky.

Canadian wh**ky has its own legal identity. It must be mashed, distilled, and aged in Canada, matured in small wood for at least three years, and bottled at no less than 40% ABV.

But here's where things get interesting.

You've already learned that American rye wh***ey must contain at least 51% rye grain. In Canada, the words "rye wh**ky" have a different history. Canadian wh**ky developed such a strong association with rye that "Canadian Wh**ky" and "Canadian Rye Wh**ky" can legally describe the same category—even when rye isn't the majority grain.

Canadian distillers also traditionally approach production differently. Rather than always creating one mash bill and distilling everything together, many produce different whiskies separately—often a lighter base wh**ky and more flavorful grain whiskies—and blend them to create the final profile.

That gives blenders enormous control. Grain selection, distillation, barrel type, maturation, and the proportions of each wh**ky can all dramatically change what's in your glass.

The result can range from light, smooth, and easy-drinking to rich, spicy, fruity, or oak-forward. Common notes include vanilla, caramel, baking spice, fruit, toasted grain, oak, and—in rye-forward expressions—peppery or herbal spice.

Canadian wh**ky is far more diverse than its reputation might suggest, and we've picked a few bottles that show just how much range the category has.
