Soper Family Farm

Soper Family Farm Transition from 23 acres in MT to 1/4 acre in WA to now microfarming up in the Rocky Mts. in N Idaho.

We have begun a new flock of laying hens along with 2 breeds of ducks as well as turkeys! We are excited to announce that our flock is being raised on 100% organic and Non GMO certified feed! We are looking forward to transitioning our 1/4 acre into a smaller scale version of the 23 acres we had in Montana. FUTURE ENDEAVORS may include:

Commercial rabbits

Homemade breads, jams, fudge, and offer

a variety of home canned produce (pending local regulations verification). We are starting a garden this spring and will be selling fresh produce. Future plans include a berry patch (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries). Beekeeping for fresh honey is also on the list of future endeavors!

I was bummed to learn my favorite go-to for a quick dinner when the kids were growing now has the "bioengineered" food label. I decided to take matters into my own hands and created this healthier version with ingredients I control. And I vacuum sealed them in mason jars for longer term storage!

Here is the base recipe:

6 ounces of uncooked elbow noodles (1 1/2 cups)
1 tsp Garlic Power
1 tsp Onion Power
2 tsp Smoked Paprika
1 tsp Sea Salt
1 tsp Cornstarch

I measured out my ingredient and added them to a bowl to incorporate throroughly. Then using my canning funnel, I added this to a pint size mason jar. I placed the lid on top and used my mason jar vacuum sealer to remove the air and seal the jar.

It is not necessary to put the rings back on after sealing. I just do to alleviate my husband's anxiety over the seals popping.

To make your meal:

Cook 1 pound of the meat of your choice. Add the ingredients from the jar into the pan with 1 cup of water and 2 cups of milk. SImmer until the macaroni is fully cooked.

This is a BASE recipe. You can add whatever vegggies, cheese, etc to it that you wish to customize the style you prefer. You can change up the noodles as you wish as well. You will need a chicken, beef or veggie broth for added flavor and can add any seasonings you wish!

Taylor continues his recovery. The skin grafts took quite well. He still has some pain from the scarring but spirits are high and the support from the community has been amazing. Taylor does have an appointment tomorrow for his right eye that he's having trouble closing completely.

Thank you all who attended the Spaghetti feed, bake sale and silent auction that was hosted by The Cottonwood Inn & Suites today.

The medical bills are rolling in. It is quite overwhelming but Courtney and Taylor are chipping away at them as they can.

Thank you all for your continued support and well wishes! Here's an updated photo from today!

Speaking of Rabbits, Casanova here showed his true colors. He disguised himself as a doe but he's really not! Little jerk.

Now, he's by himself and this girl may have babies in about a month. She was born on Halloween. He was born Christmas Eve. Same father, different mother's.

Busy day today. Hubby and I added 9 more raised planters for my fruits and veggies. Then, I hauled about 1/2 ton of Bunny Honey to fill a few of them. THAT is hard work! But beats buying a pallet of soil that won't have NEAR the nutrients of my rabbits poo.

The seeds have emeterminated! Planted on Easter. I am surprised at how well the mixed peppers from 2022 have germinated!

One of the hardest parts of raising meat animals is knowing when to say "when" with your breeding stock.

Today, my beloved Vincent crossed the bridge with assistance. He was my 1st Buck that I produced. He was beautiful, sweet natured, he was my buddy. He sired all of my current beautiful, sweet babies from a variety of Does. He produced beautiful kits.

Something happened and Vince took a turn after the last breeding. He was eating/drinking but he couldn't walk "right". I do not know how. Or why. Yet. He was perfectly healthy and then, after a time...struggling with mobility. I initially thought Wry Neck but it isn't Wry Neck.

I kept an eye on him. I didn't want my buddy to suffer. He seemed okay so I decided to keep him as a pet. All pee/poo normal. Eating/Drinking normal. Just walks like he's drunk off his ass.

I picked him up last Saturday and could feel his weight loss as I held him, indicating that he is not maintaining any longer. It also told me that I have to suck it up and make a decision. I made that decision this morning.

Thankfully, a friend who also raises meat rabbits understood my anguish. And offered to do the deed. It's not that I couldn't. I've done it before, many times. It's just that Vince was my boy. I don't name the ones that I process. But they do get the same love and devotion and I want them happy and cared for. I'd rather eat them than the inhumane meat that is bought every day at the local supermarket. Vince was never on the menu.

Yes, I raise them. Yes, I butcher them. Yes, I eat them. I know that many/most could never do what I do. But I am producing my own food with animals who are loved, get treats, get toys, get handled, and are LOVED.

Depending on what is discovered, Vince may become Prosciutto made the super old fashioned way with salting. And his hide will be tanned as a keepsake.

Honey and I are trying something "new". Breaded Baked Chicken with sourdough starter in lieu of eggs for the crust. Stay tuned!

Ps. His seasoning blend smells DIVINE!

Looked in to seed vaults. I looked at 4 different companies that provide a variety of seed packages. Out of all of the options, I decided on this one. It had the most variety of seeds that I would ACTUALLY use. Other companies had bigger varieties for lower prices but I didn't want to pay for seeds I'd never plant. Check them out! https://seedarmory.com/?ref=espumexv

Non GMO, Heirloom (so I can save seeds for the next year!) Open Pollinating and Survival Grade! They will last up to 25 years in the freezer! But, I will be using them and saving my own seeds so I basically will never have to buy seeds again!

Photo is the package I purchased but they have other options. This one was just the best fit for me!

Decided to do raised beds. Microfarming in the mountains is challenging. But, decided today was THE day to get a few things started.

20 garlic
18 peppers
12 Roma
12 Rutgers
15 Cauliflower
15 Broccoli
6 Greek Oregano
6 Thyme
6 Italian Basil
6 Mammoth Dill

I love the Ferry Morse seed starting grow lights! I also picked up 2 of their seed starting heat mats to accommodate the 2 72-pod seed starting greenhouses. The Expert Gardener indoor garden tool kit made planning the seeds super easy!

I can't wait to use my Seeding Square on the raised beds to plant the onions, potatoes, Rhubarb, carrots, 2 kinds of cucumber and, of course, green beans and zucchini.

The blueberry and raspberry bushes are going into containers.

I intend to freeze/can/dehydrate as much as I can do!

Our Story

Soper Family Farm began in 2010 in Glasgow, Montana on 23 acres in Cherry Valley Estates. An unexpected onset of West Nile Virus nearly killed my husband, leaving him bedridden for a year and forcing him to leave law enforcement after nearly 8 years of service in his home county. Sadly, we had no choice but to leave the farm I loved so very much and start over in my home state of Washington.

We are now relocated in Southwest Washington in Lewis County. I really love it here though it is difficult to restart my dream of self sustainability when downsizing from 23 acres to just 1.4 acre in the city limits. But I am determined to learn small scale “farming” and to have my dream, even if it forces me to learn to do things in a much smaller space. This page will be where I share my triumphs and trials and learn all over again how to provide for my family in a cost effective, sustainable, and healthier way.

I am raising a flock of natural free-range hens. I have 2 ducks and may offer duck eggs for sale in the future along with our chicken eggs. I am attempting to have a mixed flock with all 6 colors of eggs to offer in the near future. I intend to get commercial rabbits in the future. Not this year, but maybe the next in order to produce low cost, healthy and ethically raised meat for my family and friends. I do offer homemade breads, jams, fudge, and will have home canned produce in the future once the gardens take off and my freezer is full for my family. We are starting a very large garden this spring and will be selling fresh produce direct from our farm and possibly at the Farmer's Market. Future plans include a berry patch (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries) which may be open to friends and family and possible a small number of the public depending on the yield. Beekeeping for fresh honey is also on the list of future endeavors!
