VanLandschoot & Sons Fish Market The Freshest Lake Superior Whitefish, Caught & Sold by Fifth-Generation Family Fishermen in Munising

The early years of commercial fishing on Lake Superior started out with the American Fur Company, the first commercial fishing operation in the area, fishing near the shore of Grand Island in 1836. Across from Grand Island on the mainland is Powell's Point, where the first fishing family worked from the late 1870s through the 1940s. Several hard working families have made Munising their home port

over the years, all bringing delicious Great Lakes fish to dinner tables across the country. In 1906, a young Philip VanLandschoot immigrated from Knokke, Belgium, to the United States and settled in Gladstone, Michigan, on the north shore of Lake Michigan. After various laborer jobs, he became a fisherman's helper with the Schowy Brothers Fish Company in Gladstone. In 1914, Philip started his own fishing enterprise, and for the next thirty years successfully operated from Gladstone. "During summer," VanLandschoot said, "I would fish from my boat and in the wintertime I fished through the ice and hauled my gear by horse and sleigh." Working with Philip were his four sons, Paul, Joe, Jerome, and Francis. In 1942, the family moved to Munising, Michigan, where they built docks and boat houses on the west side of Munising Bay--initially leasing land from the Cleveland Cliffs Company. Brothers Paul, Joe, and Jerome continued the family business into the second generation. Begining in the mid-eighties, Jeome's sons Jerry, David, and Gary carried on third generation operations. Today, VanLandschoot & Sons carries on the same legacy it was founded on--consistent quality Lake Superior fish all season long. We only use trapnets (no gillnets) so our fish are hand dipped and brought up as fresh as possible, and delivered to our state-of-the-art facility that processes the fish into boneless filets. Along with our famous whitefish, we also sell trout, salmon, smoked products, homemade fish sausage, and our famous fish dip.

A little different view of VanLandschoot & Sons.

The Upper Michigan Today crew from TV6 & FOX UP recently came aboard with our family on Munising Bay to see what commercial fishing on Lake Superior actually looks like — from pulling the nets and selecting the catch to bringing fresh Lake Superior whitefish back to shore.

For our family, this has been part of life since 1914.

Five generations later, we're still fishing these waters, still learning from the generations before us, and still working to get Lake Superior whitefish from the water to your table.

A big thank you to Audrey Stetson UMT, John Redfield TV6 and everyone at TV6 & FOX UP for spending the day with us and helping tell a little piece of our story.

Over the coming weeks, we're going to share more from their visit and take you behind the scenes — what you're actually seeing on the boat, how the fish are caught and handled, what happens back on shore, and what it really takes to get a Lake Superior whitefish from the lake to your plate.

For now, take a ride with us and watch the full Upper Michigan Today feature.

Meet Jeff — our master smoker and one of the people behind VanLandschoot & Sons’ specialty smoked fish products.

Smoking fish properly takes patience, experience and attention to every batch. Here is a quick look inside the smoker at our smoked fish sausage, carefully prepared and smoked the VSI way.

Thank you, Jeff, for the craftsmanship you bring to our products and for helping carry our Lake Superior tradition forward.

Our people. Our craft. Our legacy.

When our grandfather emigrated from Belgium back in 1904 at 17 years old, he settled in Munising to lay down roots in fishing and logging. Over a century and five generations later, our family is still out on Lake Superior doing what we know best.

We sat down with TV6 recently to talk about family history and what it takes to keep a commercial fishery running today. Staying in this industry isn't easy—between changing lake ecosystems, strict regulations, and the constant challenges facing Great Lakes fisheries, commercial fishing outfits are getting fewer and farther between. Out of all the operations that used to fish these waters, our family is proud to be one of the very few left working Lake Superior.

Between 3:00 AM wake-up calls and 15-hour workdays on the water, our goal hasn't changed: bringing wild, clean Lake Superior whitefish, smoked whitefish spread, and fresh catch straight from the lake to your table. It’s hard work, but we take pride in putting out a natural, healthy product—packed with lean protein and Omega-3s—that is genuinely good for your family.

More than anything, we’re just plain grateful for our local community. Whether you're in Munising, Marquette, or anywhere across the UP, your support keeps our boats turning over every morning. Thanks for sticking with us, wanting to see us succeed, and supporting local Great Lakes fishing families.

Fresh out of the smoker. We just pulled a temporary batch of smoked salmon, smoked trout, and our classic Lake Superior whitefish. We have both fillets and whole smoked fish ready for the counter.

If you are looking to stock up your own freezer at home, we also just restocked our frozen walleye and perch fillets at both our Munising and Marquette locations. Perfect for a weekend fish fry.

These smoked runs don’t last long, so stop on by and grab yours before they're gone. Our family appreciates the local support. Fresh catch makes all the difference.

Hey Marquette—we have a quick update. Our food truck at 519 Lake Shore Blvd is going to be temporarily closed for about a week while our family handles some quick crew adjustments.

We hate missing you guys out on the lake during prime season, but we're working hard to get things properly squared away. If you or anyone you know is a reliable cook looking to join a real 5-generation Lake Superior fishing family business, please reach out to Dennis directly at [email protected] or give us a call at 906-387-3851.

Our family appreciates your patience more than you know. We’ll post updates right here the second the fryers are ready to fire back up.

We get asked a lot about what makes wild Lake Superior whitefish such a staple up here. The answer is right on the label. Clean, pure protein 22 grams of it per serving—with zero carbs and only 100 calories.
Our family doesn't add chemicals, GMOs, or antibiotics. It’s just fresh fish caught right out of the south shores of Lake Superior. When you buy from VanLandschoot & Sons Fish Market (VSI), you're getting clean food straight from the boat to your table.

Fresh catch makes all the difference when you're keeping meals healthy. Stop by the market to pick up some fresh fillets, or head over to our website to get a box shipped right to your door.
