I love being a dad. I honestly can’t even fully express how much joy my kids give to me.

I love just being with them, talking to them, and watching them become who God made them to be. It is such a privilege and a gift.

Last week I had the honor of taking with 20 dads or soon-to-be-dads about the fact that God has put the heart of a father in every man, and that every man, as he matures and grows closer to God, can’t help but see that heart come out - because God is our example and the ultimate Father.

They’ll embrace responsibility.
They’ll be present.
They’ll call out their children into who God made them to be.
They’ll lay a foundation for generations.
They’ll be a blessing to everyone around them.

Our nation and our culture is rejecting the call to fatherhood more and more as it rejects God. In the US today 1 of 4 children will grow up without a father of any sort in their lives. Childlessness is on the rise across every demographic.

The results of this are evident all over in our nation’s children.

My children know that they are loved and valued. That I pour my life into theirs so that, hopefully, they will go beyond where I have. That I have broken chains they will never have to wear.

And it is a privilege and an honor to do it for them.

In the aftermath of my oldest son Eli’s graduation I sat alone in the quiet, thinking about community and thanking God He’d given us one.

A little over a year ago, Karen and I were leaving a community that we had been a part of for 11 years. That community took us in after our time serving God overseas. It accepted us, and allowed us to be exactly who we were - but thankfully didn’t leave us there. It fanned into flames the gifts God had given to us, and allowed us to exercise them. It loved us incarnation-ally, just like Jesus.

Then God said it was time to move.

Since then, we’ve planted in a new community - one that first accepted our kids with open arms and soon accepted Karen and me as well. It honestly feels like we’ve been there forever.

On Monday, those communities - plus family and my son’s own community from school - came together for an evening in my house.

Henri Nouwen said this about community, “A mosaic consists of thousands of little stones. Some are blue, some are green... That is what our life in community is about. Each of us is like a little stone, but together we reveal the face of God to the world.”

Last week, in a normal house on a normal street, that mosaic came together for a few hours.

We broke bread together.
We honored my son and the accomplishment of finishing this chapter well.
We shared time and space.

It was glorious.

As I sat downstairs in the quiet after the party was over and everyone had gone their separate ways, I gave thanks to God for His work in our family, the beautiful mosaic He’s making, and for all of the people he’s allowed to be a part of it.

Late night run!

We’ve had a few of these open up in Tennessee, but wait times have been insane - so insane that there’s a dedicated website to track them! When we saw a 15 minute wait, we went for it, and, wow. I get the hype!

The experience, the food, the value. All around great first impression, and we’ll definitely be back!

It’s a decision that will affect not just you, but your whole family 🛒
