My favorite veg farmer, Andrew Jones and I decided earlier in the season that there should be a reality show for farmers with challenges like: how many Japanese beetles can you squish between your fingers in five minutes and how fast can you pound 50 posts into the ground. I’ve thought (and laughed) about that conversation a lot while working and have come up with a few more flower farm specific ones: how fast can you untangle stems and remove netting once a crop is done, how many stems of gomphrena can you harvest and strip in ten minutes, and how many cosmos can you harvest at the correct stage before they open too much. Farmer friends: any more ideas?

Let’s chat about cosmos for a minute. I was anti-cosmos as a cut flower during my first two years as a flower farmer because the vase life is about five minutes long, the stems can be a bit droopy, and they’re a pain to harvest. Since I’ve started growing almost exclusively for weddings and events, my opinion has completely changed because they add the sweetest whimsy to a bouquet or arrangement. Now I grow them in four colors, grow three varieties of white, and can’t imagine summer without them. They have definitely taught me that the market you’re growing for plays a huge role in crop planning!

Last week was full of planting for spring. Thousands of plugs went into the ground, including snapdragons, campanula, rudbeckia, yarrow, feverfew, foxglove, cress, echinops, sweet peas, forget-me-nots, dianthus, pansies, scabiosa, and tweedia. Also in the mix were direct sown orlaya, ammi, dara, bachelor buttons, larkspur, agrostemma, and poppies.

I’m loving perennial phlox more and more each year. The second flush is coming in now, and just in time for some fun wedding palettes. I’ve been adding more and more perennials each year to the farm and I’m so pleased that they are really starting to produce! Totally worth the wait.

Eek, you guys! These are three peonies that I pulled out of the cooler and rehydrated two days ago after being dry stored since April. Are they perfect? No. But, they were just loosely wrapped in paper. I think that with tighter wrapping, I will be able to store them to use in weddings through the beginning of August! Can you imagine, dahlias and peonies together? I definitely plan to experiment more with this next year!

The recent cooler mornings have me thinking about fall! Not to mention the flowers from last weekend’s wedding at Hawkes...

I took a break from social media for all of July, smack in the middle of the growing and wedding season. While I love all parts of growing and designing, continuously posting about it is hard for the introvert in me. I’d much rather have my hands in the dirt or on flowers, doing my thing, and chatting with couples and other vendors in real life.

Although I’ve been quiet here, all things flowers have continued on! The fields have changed from spring to summer blooms, seeds are about to be sown for fall planting, and I feel recharged to share all of the beauty with you!

I can’t believe that it’s already the middle of June! The past month has been a whirlwind of the best kind, full of family, friends, dahlia tuber planting, seed starting, tearing out spring flowers, planting summer flowers, weddings, and trying to get ahead of the weeds (not totally successful on this one).
