I saw this on one of the corgi groups. I really liked how this person explained the corgi breed.
Copied from someone. I only breed PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI'S. I don't mean to offend anyone. I love dogs. I don't like the people that represent the mixes as purebred dogs. Please do your research first.
TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION: what is a “corgi”
Looks like it’s time to explain why a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, when bred together, create a mixed breed dog, not a full bred Corgi.
First, we have to understand that Corgi is not a breed. It is a Welsh word for “dog”, like Hund in German is also another word for “dog”, and Chien is French for ”dog”, and Perro is Spanish for dog.
Breeding two French dog breeds, such as a Berger Picard to a Beauceron does not get you a purebred Chien.
Breeding two German breeds, such as a Dachshund to a Bavarian Mountain Hound also does not get you a purebred Hund.
Some people are confused because both Welsh “corgis” look similar in size and type. But compare both breeds to other dwarf dogs, such as the Valhund. No one would breed a Valhund to a Pembroke and claim it is a purebred, even though they are more similar than a Pembroke and a Cardi are.
By the same token, no one would breed a Labrador Retriever to a Golden Retriever and claim it is a pure Retriever. Bloodhound to Foxhound does not create a purebred hound. A Springer Spaniel to a Tibetan Spaniel does not get you a pure Spaniel.
Maybe talking dogs is too confusing. If you took a Chevy pickup truck and put a Dodge Ram engine in it, the truck is no longer either a Chevy nor a Dodge.
If you lived in two towns of the same size or with similar names, you wouldn’t combine the names and consider them one place.
If your last name happens to be Miller and your neighbor is a Muller, you aren’t from the same family, just as Anderson and Andersen are not the same, nor is Smith and Smythe.
Pembrokes crossed with Cardigans are not purebred “Corgis”. They are Pembroke x Cardigan crosses.
Like most dog lovers, I have absolutely nothing at all whatsoever against mixed breed dogs. My issue is with people who choose to get a mixed breed dog and then, for reasons I cannot comprehend, feel the need to represent it as a purebred.
Folks, dogs are not ashamed of their pedigrees or lack thereof. We shouldn’t be, either. Dogs are perfectly happy being whoever and whatever they are. Please, let’s respect that and our own choices.
I feel representing a mixed breed as a purebred is an insult to the dog. It implies the dog is not good enough as it is. No one should ever be ashamed of their dog. Dogs are cool and wonderful and special just the way they are. Please don’t demean them.
