Happy Italian-American month! 🇺🇸🇮🇹🗽

October was chosen mainly because of its link to Christopher Columbus (Cristoforo Colombo), the Italian-born explorer who reached the Americas on October 12, 1492. Columbus Day, a federal holiday since 1937, had long been a point of pride and a celebration of heritage for Italian Americans, especially after the hardship and discrimination many immigrants faced in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Building on that, Italian American groups, such as The Order Sons of Italy in America, pushed for a broader recognition. In 1989, Congress and President George H.W. Bush designated October as Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month. The month now honors the wider contributions of Italian Americans in areas like the arts, science, politics, business, and food, not just Columbus himself. It serves as a way for Italians to honor their heritage while also giving thanks and feeling blessed to be here in the Land of the Free! 🇺🇸
