The House o'Rapscallion

The House o'Rapscallion I am an AKC Breeder of Merit and this page will follow my next generations of show dogs, some born, some still a sparkle in daddy's eye.

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks because it's just been so crazy and heart wrenching around here that I just didn't have it in me to post much.

Before Thanksgiving, Bootsie, who I bred to Leela's sire, Tom and was supposed to have been empty, went into labor with a beautiful, large singleton puppy. We ended up at the ER because she wasn't making progress and after a few hours of management she finally whelped the puppy, a girl, only for the ER staff to abandon her after three breaths to tend to another pet in their care. Well, the puppy needed more stimulation than that, and by the time they got back to her she had died.

Not long after that, Bootsie raided the cat food bin while I was out of the room for five minutes, and ended up at the vet because I was afraid she was bloating. She did not, but it was two days of exhaustive drama on top of the heartbreak of losing that puppy, and I just needed a mental timeout.

But here we are, a few days drama free and lots of sleep later, and I am slowly, but surely, coming back around and enjoying Leela's presence in my life.

Of course, Leela herself is a joy and is very good about keeping me present. She and QTip have developed a bond and they enjoy cuddling up together. Our routine continues to be a morning cuddle while I drink my coffee in the mornings. And when Leela gets a little rambunctious, QTip is not afraid to offer up a skippity pat pat ... or two... or three...to put her back in her place. Leela is quick to get the message.

I took Leela out to meet the chickens and she was majorly unimpressed with them. Her tail was down the entire time we were in the back yard, so maybe ti wasn't entirely the chickens, but it was a new area entirely.

Leela is under quarantine because she's only had two of her vaccination shots (third is due in about a week), so she will be under quarantine for at least another month. This means I can't get her out to socialize, which will really help with her confidence in new areas. Especially if I take her out with Zo who is oozing with confidence.

But downtown Dahlonega, GA is the perfect place to socialize puppies. It's a major tourist destination for the holidays so there should be tons of people out there dying to meet a couple of adorable basset hound puppies.

In other news, Leela is almost up to 22 pounds. When I weighed her in a couple of weeks ago, she was at 19.6 pounds and this morning she was at 21.10 pounds. I think I'll up her food a bit to see how she handles it.

A little bit of history on the Rapscallion lineage.

This is half of where Leela comes from. She has three generations of ROM's behind her on her sire's side. Scroll through the photos for more information about each dog and their accomplishments as well as their relationship to Leela.

For this post, Zo does not actually go back to my original pedigrees, but Pino is her sire, and Pino will be the future while I scramble to put a semblance of my pedigrees back together. Read on through the photos for more of that story.

Zo likes to get me up around 4 a.m. most mornings, and she's getting Leela used to doing the same. Since it's impossible for me to get back to sleep afterwards, I just put on a pot of coffee, feed the dogs, and then this happens while I drink my coffee every morning.

This is Zen N Rapscallion's Purple People Eater (Leela) because of her little sharky puppy teeth that can easily rip through human skin. She is 12 weeks old in this photo.

Sire: GCHS CH Obie N Chasan's Tomfoolery, ROM
Dam: Zen's Unexpected Journey

Clear: MPS1, Thrombopathia, POAG (will be DNA tested for Lafora)
Carrier: L gene for long hair

Her sire, Tom, is a son of my Raider (I will cite family history in a separate post), CN CH/AKC GCH CH Rapscallion's Corporate Raider o'Chasan, ROM

Leela will make her ring debut from the 4-6 month baby puppy class in January, likely in Jackson, MS, but I'm still debating on Alexandria, LA the following week.

This is Rapscallion N Zen's Tale That Can't Be Told (ZoSo)
Sire: CH Pinochet (Imp IT)
Dam: Zen's Unexpected Journey
Clear: MPS1, Lafora, POAG, Thrombopathia (by parentage)
Carrier: L gene for long hair

Zo has already started her show career and won her first major her second time in the ring.

Her dam, JoJo, is a long haired basset and cannot be shown, but she's so structurally sound I had to see what she could produce, so I DNA tested Pino for the long haired gene, which he does not carry. JoJo and pino produced a litter of three, which Zo was my keeper. Her brother, Anchovy, also shows some promise and so I will get up to NC one of these days to get an evaluation on him.

Pino came to me from Italy at a time when it was difficult to find males who DNA tested clear on MPS1, Lafora, POAG and Thrombopathia by parentage. He will begin working towards his grand championship title in 2026.

Meet ZoSo and Leela, they are half sisters and my next show prospects. Follow them through their trials and tribulations as they learn what it takes to be a show dog and on through their wins as they compete for their championship titles, meet the cats, chickens, and adventure out into the public arena.

ZoSo is 9-months old. Her AKC registered name is Rapscallion N Zen's Tale That Can't Be Told, a line from Led Zeppelin's song "Ramble On."

The little sq**rt Zo is 'chatting' with is Zen n Rapscallion's Purple People Eater (Leela). In this photo she is 12 weeks old and has only been here for three or four days. She and ZoSo have become the bestest of friends and I am looking forward to beginning her show training... starting with learning to stack and walk on a leash.

This is Groovy (Susurrare Salix G VikingGroove) who will be joining the herd tomorrow (April 8, 2022). I am so excited to bring his genetics to the farm. The photos are some of the udders behind him (Dam and Grandam on both sides of his pedigree). You can see why I'm excited to have him onboard.
