Why you may need a big powerful Abruzzo Sheepdog (formerly Maremma) like Aslan. He is 165 lbs and 7 years old. The mountain lion looks to be 120 lbs. California Fish and Wildlife has to investigate to insure a good kill since the cats are protected.

Big cats call for a special kind of chasing off, and if that doesn’t work, killing skill. A true apex predator needs a true apex predator to deter or kill. Areas of the world that don’t have these wild predators can’t know the size and skill needed to handle them.

Maremmas may “seem” like a softer LGD because they are usually nice to people and trainable to poultry, but they are just as brave and badass as any LGD out there. I’ve placed dogs where they have to navigate grizzly bears, wild hogs, big cats, wild packs… as long as you have a few Maremmas around, commensurate with your predator load, your livestock will be safe.

Xander’s training as my Service Dog progresses. He is doing very well - calm, not bitey jumpy puppy (well once), loves the obstacles, riding in the car and side by side. We are starting outings to places like stores and restaurants. His training is pretty intense for a little guy. We break it up into tiny bits.

Xander is training to be my service dog! He is doing great. I picked him because his temperament is more labradoodle than Abruzzo-Maremma.
