Whether you eat animals or not, animal agriculture is important for restoring environmental and soil health.

The soil on the left is the result of regenerative agricultural practices being implemented and holds significantly more organic and Carbon matter. Sheep and cattle were carefully managed and rotated on the land. They ate the grass, deposited their urine and dung and were then moved away to let the grass grow back quickly.

The cycle is then repeated at a later date depending on season variability and vegetation recovery. This allows the pulling of carbon into the soil. It is darker because carbon from the atmosphere is now in the soil making it more nutrient rich and dense.

The soil on the right is from a commercial farm that grows grain and uses no animals on the land.

The soil with more carbon holds a lot more water (roughly 150,000 liters of water per hectare for every 1% of carbon that’s added) and is full of microbes.

Animals play a crucial role in regenerating the land and getting carbon into the soil when properly managed.

These ‘regenerative’ practices also can be applied to crop management through the careful integration of livestock.

THE WORST WEEDS ARE YOUR BEST MEDICINE

Our reliance on so small a Pharmacopoeia has caused a number of problems to develop. Many once common herbs are now threatened or endangered species. As our materia medica shrinks, so do our options for treatment and the chances of adulteration increase.

Reasons:
• GMPs have made it much more costly to produce herbal products.
• Overharvesting has made some herbs scarce or expensive.
• Many popular Eclectic remedies are little-known and rarely used today.
• Many western trained medical practitioners are uncomfortable using herbs that have little or no research data, even though they have an extensive history of traditional and ethnobotanical usage.
• Herb users (layman and professionals alike) often find it much easier to give an “astringent” or an “adaptogen” assuming that herbs with the same generalized properties will have the same action.

Benefits:
Adventurous, hardy weeds that are common throughout much of the USA and are abundant and easily procured:
• reduce herbicide use
• prevent habitat destruction due to invasive species of plants

Common and Weedy Plant #7:
Eclipta prostrata (synonym E. alba, E. erecta)

• The herb is used to tonify the liver and kidney yin: dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, weak knees, low back pain, and prematurely graying hair
•Bleeding caused by deficient liver/kidney yin with heat in the blood
•In Ayurvedic medicine, it is also used as a rasayana to enhance memory and cerebral circulation and to calm the nerves.

Plant more Natives!!!

This is why you don’t have to water native plants. And those roots act like sponges to control flooding.

All care takers know what’s up. Doesn’t matter what style of care. When it’s time to take care of your animals, “it’s time to take care of your animals.” 🐣🐓
