dear community,
we’ve chosen our name because we have instinctively decided to live our lives and operate our farm according to the earth’s natural cycles. by observing nature’s signals, we are more in tune with the changing of the seasons and we can better know where to focus our intent. we feel the importance of this way of life wholeheartedly and, as we settle into a rhythm here at harbinger farm, we’d like to share our explorations with our community, both near and far.

did anyone order a BROCCOLI tower?!!
it’s safe to say, matt’s broccoli patch is nothing short of thriving, so we’re bringing a rather humongous load with us tomorrow! we challenge y’all to wipe us out so we don’t have to haul any of it back home! hope to see you downtown from 9am-1pm!

FERMENTED HARISSA
last year we grew some aleppo peppers with the intent of making a harissa but, we had so many hot sauces in the works, we ran out of crock space and had to dry the peppers to store for a later use. a few weeks ago we unearthed the stash and rehydrated them in sea salt brine, along with lots of garlic and spices, a little red onion and sundried tomatoes. three weeks in “the soup” and the mixture was ready to be strained and blended, and what did we get? a tantalizing spreadable paste that will transport you to the ethereal spice markets of north africa.

GREEN LEAF LETTUCE
we know we said we were going to try and bring little gems to market each week, but the dang slugs decided otherwise 😤 while we wait for the next batch to size up, we have a decent stand-in option for you... we’re trying out a new green leaf head lettuce variety called ‘fusion’ (destined for sandwiches at lighthouse center bakery) that’s been hybridized with romaine, so it’s crunchy along the rib and frilly-yet-sturdy along the top—basically a big little gem! 🥬 and we’ve got plenty of it, so join us in seizing the fortuitous backup plan tomorrow
from 9am-1pm!

have you heard?! the market is expanding this week! we’ll be stretching southward to cover the 600 block of jackson street as well! there are many new and returning vendors to check out, in addition to live music! so bring the whole family and plan to spend a good portion of your saturday basking in all that downtown roseburg has to offer!

P.S. our dear friends are getting married next weekend, so we’ll be absent from market next saturday 5/30 in order to be present for their big day! this means be sure to stock up on enough spring veggie goodness tomorrow to last you through the first week of june!

we haven’t been especially loud about it because it’s almost a too-good-to-be-real *pinch me* kind of situation, but matt’s farmer dreams finally came true this spring and we joined team kubota 🧡

this is a huge leap of faith for a small farm like us, taking on a long term loan with a serious price tag 🤑 but we’re evermore dedicated to bringing our community quality produce, grown with organic amendments and honest intentions, despite the seemingly endless challenges we and so many other independent businesses are facing in these trying times.

this glorious machine has already saved our backs so much heavy lifting and, with time, we can acquire the implements to help with a lot more of the strain that manual labor brings to both body and mind.

we couldn’t have made this investment without knowing that our loyal customers have our back and will help us make the payments looming in our future by continuing to shop with us at the farmers market, as well as accessing the other sales outlets we provide. even though we know y’all are feeling the pressures of the current economy too, it means so much to see your commitment to supporting our mission is still unwavering and you show up each week at market regardless, to spend your precious dollars where they really count. “thank you” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

it’s hard to believe that may is already halfway through and summer’s bounty is right around the corner. speaking of, we still have a few csa shares available for any of you who may have been considering joining up—the season kicks off the first week of june, so now’s the time to jump on board if you want to be along for the ride. you can find all the details on our website >>LINK IN BIO

read the message in the tea …er, lettuce… leaves:
LITTLE GEMS are in your future 🔮
it’s true, there’s a serious cult following after this ultra-special baby romaine lettuce. mind you, they’re super labor intensive to harvest, so we can only produce so much at a time. but we’ll be rationing our succession plantings, so the idea is to consistently bring small batches to market each week going forward.
moral of the story is: don’t be greedy—be considerate of others and save some of this tasty treat for the next shopper, please and thank you! hasta mañana

HF CARROTS ARE BACK!!!
what can we say? our soil grows remarkable carrots and we’re not mad about it.

we currently have 2,000 row feet planted and we’re still seeding away! matt’s plan is to have them consistently at market for the rest of year, so let’s see if the stars align and they continue to flourish so we can bring these charming chaps to the people, starting tomorrow while supplies last!

PRO TIP: we take the time and care to bunch them while the tops are in good shape, so please don’t waste this valuable food source—make a dang green sauce (with mint!) already! or at least feed them to a creature who will benefit from their myriad vitamins and minerals. seriously! consider composting them a very last resort.

FRENCH FINGERLINGS are quite possibly our favorite new potato. that’s why we reserve 200ft of tunnel space to plant an early crop each january, so we can have these melt-in-your-mouth magenta-skinned spuds as a substantial offering to help spur us into the main growing season! we’re rationing the harvests of these special taters so, if you happen to miss out this week, it won’t be your only chance to savor them. even still, we hope to see y’all tomorrow from from 9am-1pm for another gorgeous spring market day!
