Elm oyster (Hypsizygus ulmarius) actually not a true oyster (pleurotus spp.)but damned if we can tell! These guys are fruiting in a make shift grow house while we work on remodeling their room with a new humidity system hoping they grow well.. the challenge at south point is keeping humidity up and fresh air ample because most the year our air is pretty dry 60%humidity instead of the 90% + the mushrooms need. These ones are a little “leggy” ( smaller thinner caps and longer stems). We are not at the farmers market currently :/ but will be dehydrating these for our phoenix oyster/elm oyster dual extract tincture. (which you can get at the link in our bio!!)

Things don’t always go as planned when growing mushrooms - this Reishi decided to pop out the filter patch and make a classic beautiful shelf instead! Has some contamination so we will not be using it for product but it sure is pretty to look at 😍 Note the brown dust all over the bag, which are spores. This is why we grow in the bag as antlers, since Reishi takes typically 6 months to mature for harvest.

Just a little about our Reishi dual extraction tincture: We make our Red Reishi dual extracts with organic maui oceans vodka and Wai’ohinu spring water. Extracting for a minimum of two months in alcohol then a four hour hot water extraction. Water content is reduced and the two extracts are added together. Our jars are packed to the top with ground dehydrated reishi for making this extract. We grow the traditional Chinese red Reishi Ganoderma lingzhi. Our mushrooms are grown off a renewable substrate of macadamia husk and coffee parchment from local farms. what’s in your soil/substrate? Though not as high yields as with beet pulp or soy hull are expected.. I haven’t harvested the first crop with the coffee berry yet. One thing is for sure the mycelium love it. The four batches I made with soy hulls I sourced from another farmer were mutant freaks almost doubleing my yields, it’s hard to step away from the draw of profiting 2x as much.. that is why the majority of mushroom industry uses “master mix” (50% soy hull/50% fuel pellets) one thing for sure I am SO happy to not deal with that skinny stuff again!!! And am very pleased with all from the island locally produced substrate. Again mahalo nui, for providing these berries and parchment!!!
