It’s that time of the month. It’s milk test time! What does it mean when I say I’m doing a milk test and why is it important?
Monthly milk testing allows me to establish a baseline of milk production, by weight, and track performance and progress in my dairy goats. I know by the numbers who my high producers are, if someone has dropped in production, and how a doe is performing year after year. This helps me decide on future breedings to work towards the quality and quantity of milk I want my herd to produce.
I am able to check milk quality through protein and butterfat quantities and monitor health issues such as mastitis through somatic cell count (SCC).
Milk data is used by ADGA to award production stars (*M) which helps build a genetic profile of a goat and her offspring, adding credibility and value to the bloodline. When you buy a goat for milk production, it’s nice to see her history and her family history. You have a better profile of what you should expect from her production. Likewise, with a buck, you can see him dams and sisters production and his potential as a sire is based on the does behind him and his daughters.
In short, milk testing helps me track performance, improve genetics, ensure milk quality, and maintain official records—all of which make my herd more productive and valuable and ensure customer satisfaction in milk and goat purchases. There is a lot more to it than just “milking”.
