B Kosuge Wines

B Kosuge Wines I’ve been making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for more than thirty years, from all over California and as far south as Chile.

For my own B Kosuge Wines, I make small quantities of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay from sites in the Sonoma Coast and Carneros Sonoma Coast and Carneros Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay

It's the time of year that we're going through all the new wines, topping up barrels and getting everything ready for bed. In the process we're getting to know them and are connecting the dots from a vintage that has been a bit perplexing. The early wines, like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are looking good. The Pinots are especially promising, intensely colored and wonderfully fresh. Chardonnay as always is revealing itself slowly--it takes a while for the flavors to emerge, often not until Malolactic is finished. Alcohols across the board are pretty modest, in many cases lower than expected. Later ripening varieties like Cabernet are more uneven, but I'm reserving judgement on them since they're young. Overall impression: positive.

Scenes from harvest 2025. We were blessed with a great team this year. A few random images: digging out a tank; mouse patrol takes a catnap; tanks and hoses (lot of harvest involves moving wine around); harvest party. Could not have done it without the hard working souls who came and helped us this year.

The wine that started it all 20 years ago is back. 2023 is the 20th vintage of The Shop, and while some of the winemaking details have evolved during those years, the soul of the wine remains the same: honest, unfussy wine for real people, priced accordingly. Shipping is included for orders of 12 bottles or more. Order soon to receive the wine before the holidays, shipping is ever more complicated these days! https://www.bkosugewines.com/shop/wines/purchase/2023-the-shop-carneros-pinot-noir

We are starting to press off the last few tanks. Almost all of them are Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety that I don't work with much, being a Pinot guy. This despite living in Napa. This tank is St. Helena Cabernet from the Milat vineyard, for SHUNYI CELLARS , one of my clients. In this case, the press wine was good, and added some texture to the free run wine, so I added some of it back, and only kept the hard press separate.

Harvest is now in full swing and we're on to harvesting Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands and pressing the early lots--but here are a few throwback shots from the first day of harvest 2025.

I say it a lot: my favorite wines are those that are both fun and serious. This fall I'm releasing what are probably my two most fun wines, 2023 Gamay Noir and 2023 El Galpon Pinot Noir. Aged in concrete to preserve freshness, they are a natural pair. Inspired by Cru Beaujolais and Bourgogne Passetoutgrain respectively, they are meant for quaffing and merriment. They'll be great for late summer gatherings over the grill, or pizza, or any one of a number of delicious but not fussy fare. https://www.bkosugewines.com/shop/

Come see me at my favorite watering hole, Cadet Wine & Beer Bar in downtown Napa. I'll be pouring my fall releases: 2023 El Galpon and 2023 Gamay Noir, plus recently released 2023 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. It all happens on Wednesday August 13, 5pm-8pm. A modest charge for a flight of all four wines, which will also be available by the glass or bottle. Hope to see you there!

This was the last pressload of 2024 back in November, some skin contact Malvasia. As I write this we are bottling the majority of the 2024 wines. Hard to believe they have already been "in the house" for almost a year. In the vineyards this week I saw the first color of the season, which means that harvest is only about a month away. Time is moving too fast!

On Memorial Day weekend my wife and I went to Madcap in San Anselmo. I had been wanting to go there for a long time. Madcap has an exalted reputation and a Michelin star, and Riley Siegel, budding winemaker and daughter of chef-owner Ron Siegel, worked harvest with me a few years ago. So there were many reasons. One might think that selling wine is all fancy dinners and hobnobbing with chefs and sommelliers but in reality I don't get to do much of that. Going out to a fancy dinner is still a special occasion for me. If you haven't been to Madcap, go. You will not be disappointed.

San Francisco people! Recently I learned that California Wine Merchant in San Francisco has been in business for 50 years. I've known owner Greg O'Flynn for at least 30 of those years but have not done a tasting there since this photo was taken back in 2018, so I am long overdue for a return visit. On Monday May 12 I get my chance. I'll be pouring my spring releases at the CWM bar from 5pm-8pm. $20 to taste. CWM Wine Club members and a guest attend free of charge. Hope to see you there!

It's a bit of a cliche to post a photo of new growth in the vineyard (and this flowering apple tree next to the vineyards) but I can't resist. So much depends upon the beginning of the growing season. Too early, and frost risk is high. Late growth can mean that spring weather is bad, either too cold or too wet or both, or that the vines are compromised in some way. Uniform growth bodes well for even ripening--although it is not guaranteed until we get into bloom. This is why I like to get out among the vines as often as I can, to "read" the season. The more in tune with the vines I am, the better decisions I make later in the year, when the fruit arrives at the winery.

The 2024 vintage was the 13th (lucky? Or unlucky?) for my Rosé. It will also be the last. As time marches on and retirement inches ever closer I am working to simplify my life. Make a little less wine. Stop working 6 and 7 days a week. Give myself time to enjoy life while I still can. If you've liked my rosé in the past, this is your last chance to get it. There are only 92 cases. Oh, and did I mention it is quite tasty? https://www.bkosugewines.com/shop/wines/purchase/2024-rose-of-pinot-noir
