Rolling limestone hills as far as you can see. The Santa Ynez River cutting through the valley below. A Pacific wind that never fully lets up. Cool, persistent, the kind that keeps the fruit on the vine long after other regions have already harvested.

This is Lindsay's Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. One of California's smallest and most coveted cool-climate AVAs, tucked between the towns of Buellton and Lompoc in Santa Barbara County. 205 acres of rolling hills. Six distinct limestone soil types. And a sense of place so specific that you can taste exactly where you are in every single glass.

The 2021 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir sourced from here is candied red cherry, dusty minerals, cumin and brown sugar on a finish that lingers long after the glass is empty. A wine for the curious. A place unlike anywhere else in California.

You've seen it on labels before. "Proprietary Blend". But what does it actually mean, and why should you care?

It means the winemaker isn't bound by rules. No varietal percentages to hit, no appellation minimums to satisfy. Just the freedom to take the best fruit from the best vineyards and blend it into exactly what it should be. Nothing more, nothing less.

Most of the world's most celebrated wines are blends.

If you're not familiar with those names, just know this, these are three of the most respected wine critics in the world. And they all said the same thing about our 2023 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay: it's exceptional.

But here's what that actually means in the glass.

It smells like a fruit bowl in the best possible way. Pears, stone fruit, a hint of vanilla. It tastes like ripe nectarines, fresh apple and honey, with just enough brightness to keep every sip feeling clean and alive. It's not too heavy, not too light. The 2022 La Scala and a hot grill. Nobody leaves disappointed.

A great red blend doesn't need a special occasion. It needs the right food. And this time of year, that means fire, char and something worth slicing into.

A grilled ribeye, the fat rendering just enough to soften the tannins and pull out every dark fruit note. Lamb chops with a herb crust that plays straight into La Scala's anise and cocoa powder backbone. A slow-roasted beef that turns a Sunday into something worth remembering.
