Yes, we are fielding calls for available land - Again, we are looking for fallow land of all types (short or long term lease or other). I've been contacted by a landowner regarding some land. I've advised that our goal would be to plant next season. This is a two-acre piece of land, has an existing well, used for horses, ground testing for optimum usage, the land is protected from all sides.
What can this land accommodate from the start? A goal might be to, depending on the ground testing, plant a nutritious cover crop on the land in the fall, 2025 spring plant a produce crop of Broccoli (Sun king Hybrid) with a companion plant like Beets, Onion or Garlic, harvest the crops (40-100 Days). Utilize all waste in our Worm Composting Bins. Plant a cover crop (field peas, clover, etc.) for (40-50 days), turn this land over to a broiler chicken run of 800 to 1000 chickens rotationally every 70 days, 3 broiler yields, moving them intensively (210 days). And prep the land again. This land can produce 12,000 # of chicken, bone meal, broth, feather meal, and process waste for our Black Soldier Fly Larvae Feed Process, as well as 7 tons of broccoli, beets, garlic and onions... This is 2 Acres! Live the dream.
Another goal would be to harvest rainwater and carbon on this property, you can see that this (Beautiful) land doesn't have a cover crop on it. This is common, although I'm sure one starts to grow in the rainy season, as we said this land would be covered all year, we would also drill rain catchments throughout the property annually. Simple holes. To catch rainwater so it does not leave this property. Get that rain into the substrate as much as possible. We're looking at the big picture here. It takes ground water to grow crops. We want to do it better than most.
Is this what we want? I'd hope so. Let's not talk about sustainability in Napa, let's do it. We need working members of the Buying Co-op to start. You have to trust this can all be possible. And please keep lining up land for us.
