François Villard is one of the great producers of France’s Northern Rhône Valley. The chef-turned-winemaker founded his domaine in 1989 and became an overnight sensation with his first release in 1991. His wines have curved in style over the years, and today they are as terroir-driven and focused as any in the region. Explore great Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu with François himself this June 10.

Compline Wine Club members—pay attention! We’ve featured both of these German superstars in clubs over the years. Now, the folks behind Meyer-Näkel and Schäfer-Fröhlich are headed here.

On June 11, Meet DORTE NÄKEL, 5th-generation winegrower at the Ahr’s best estate, Meyer-Näkel, and MATS GENHEIMER, who is representing the Nahe heavy-hitter Schäfer-Fröhlich.

Meyer-Näkel brought the idea of dry, serious Pinot Noir to the Ahr region in the 1980s, and sisters Dorte and Meike now run the winery that was founded by their parents. Together, they survived the catastrophic floods that ravaged the Ahr region in 2021 and destroyed the family winery. Spurred by Dorte’s work in the vineyards and cellar, Meyer-Näkel achieved the title of Germany’s Winery of the Year in 2024 (Vinum WeinGuide).

Meanwhile, Tim Fröhlich’s work with Riesling and Pinot Blanc in the Nahe has been a revelation. To keep his focus purely in the vineyard, Mats Genheimer does... most everything else, including bringing the wines right here to us.

This will be a tasting to remember, punctuated by a few umlauts.

Together, we are going to explore one of the most unmistakable, iconic terroirs of all time, through the lens of one of its most venerable producers.

CHǍTEAU BEAUCASTEL - May 21

The estate’s history dates to the 1500s, and its Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards famously include every variety authorized in the appellation.

The Perrin family has stewarded Château Beaucastel since 1909, expanding over generations to include vineyards throughout the Southern Rhône Valley. Today, Famille Perrin produces an impressive spectrum of wines across the Rhône, spanning appellations, styles, and price points.

On May 21, join Famille Perrin Export Director Emmanuel Lemoine for a tasting featuring an extraordinary range of vintages from Château Beaucastel, preceded by a selection of wines from the family’s other Rhône Valley estates.

Chiara Ciavolich - May 20!

While Abruzzo isn’t the first place in Italy people look for incredible wine, its top tier of producers are capable of making some of the best reds and whites in the country, from varieties that don’t always merit distinction—Montepulciano, Pecorino, and Trebbiano (d’Abruzzo).

One of the leading lights of the Abruzzo wine scene is Ciavolich. The Ciavolich family has been farming vines in the province of Pescara since 1853, and Chiara Ciavolich has been leading the domaine alongside her husband Giancarlo since 2004.

Join Chiara at Compline and explore the “Green Heart of Italy”—Abruzzo—through six of her wines. We’ve become big fans of her “Fosso Cancelli” bottlings, and longstanding club members may recall seeing her Trebbiano d’Abruzzo show up in a past shipment.

Don’t miss the most important modern champions of the most long-lived wine in history—Madeira! Ricardo Freitas and Mannie Berk are coming to the shop on May 18.

If you’ve spent any time talking with Matt about wine, you probably know that Madeira is one of his favorite categories in the wine world. So we’re especially excited to welcome importer Mannie Berk of the Rare Wine Company and Ricardo Freitas, third-generation director of Vinhos Barbeito—the island’s most important modern producer.

Madeira holds a singular place in American history—it was the wine used to toast the founding of the United States! To mark this year’s 250th anniversary celebration, Ricardo created a special bottling for the Rare Wine Co. Historic Series: the Declaration of Independence Special Reserve.

At this tasting, you’ll have the opportunity to observe Ricardo create that blend, and taste through each of the components used in the final wine.

In addition to the Declaration blending experience, we’ll pour eight more wines from Barbeito and the Rare Wine Co. Historic Series, including two dry table wines from the island, followed by six fortified examples of Madeira:

When you get one appellation-defining Spanish producer visiting, you count yourself lucky. When you get two in one evening—that’s one incredible night in store.

We welcome siblings Manuel and Encarna Mendez from Do Ferreiro and Jose Mas Barberà from Costers del Priorat on Thursday, April 30, to the wine shop! The Méndez family’s story begins before Rías Baixas was even established as an appellation. Their father, Gerardo, founded Do Ferreiro in Val do Salnés at a time when few could imagine what Albariño would become. Today, their wines are a benchmark for the region.

Costers del Priorat, founded in 1934, predates the modern rise of Priorat. While the region is often defined by Garnacha, much of Jose Mas Barberà’s work centers on Samsó (Carignan), a variety uniquely suited to Priorat’s rugged terrain. His blends follow the classic style, while the single-vineyard Clos Cypres brings remarkable clarity to Samsó on its own.

Come meet these superstars from separate corners of Spain on the 30th!

2023 is just the second vintage she and her partner Jean have made after steadfastly recovering the core of her family’s vineyard holdings, sold by her grandfather in 2004.
