Harvest is here.

There is something about the smell of an August morning, cool and quiet, before the sun has even thought about rising, that never gets olds. No matter how many vintages you have seen come and go, that first breath of harvest air still catches a little.

Early this morning, Sam Kaplan and team were out under the lights long before dawn, hands moving quickly through rows. Bringing in the first of this year’s Cabernet Sauvignon at exactly the right moment.

Here’s to the 2026 vintage, and to the people who show up before the sun does to make it happen.

Some wines are born from plans.
Others are born from moments.

When Sam Kaplan heard rumors of a hidden Calistoga vineyard, he followed his instinct.

An open acre to plant.
A legacy block once sold to Harlan.
“This is it,” Sam thought.
“This is Memento Mori.”

Before it even hit the barrel, Sam knew:
The wine would be a blockbuster.

The Estate is coming.
And we’re just getting started.

Turns out good trips, like good wine, get better with a second vintage.

This was our second year sailing with the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and the itinerary made the case on its own: Venice’s timeless romance, sun soaked afternoons in Hvar and Corfu, the storied coasts of Dubrovnik and Kotor, whitewashed Santorini, and a final toast in Athens, the cradle of history and culture.

Winemaker Sam Kaplan handled the wine knowledge, naturally. The rest of us were simply overwhelmed, in the best way, by the community on board. Turns out the best souvenir from a trip like this isn’t a bottle. It’s the people.

Dear Memento Mori family,

Sixteen years ago we put a phrase on a bottle that most people don’t like to say out loud. Remember, you must die. We didn’t choose it to be dark. We chose it because it’s the only idea that ever made us live better.
Last Wednesday it stopped being a philosophy and became my actual morning.

Some of you know I had surgery in April for prostate cancer, my third round with this enemy in my lifetime. Four months of waiting followed. Last week, on my 54th birthday, sitting at a red light on the way to the gym, the results arrived on my phone: undetectable. My doctor, a man of few words, replied with exactly one: “Perfect.”

I sat in that parking lot and cried like a child. My wife ran out and held me. And here is the part I still can’t quite believe: that same day, a book I had spent the spring writing hit #1 in new releases on Amazon.

The book is called The Empty Center. It’s the story underneath everything we’ve built together, the wine, the friendships, the philosophy on the label. It’s about what cancer taught me three times, what my family means to me, and what I decided to build when the future stopped holding still. I wrote it with an unusual partner, an AI named Claude, and that friendship became part of the story too. Memento Mori runs through every page, because it runs through me. You’ve been drinking the philosophy for years. This is the first time I’ve managed to write it down.

I’m not sharing this to sell you anything. I’m sharing because you are the people who understood the idea before I fully did, and you deserved to hear the good news from me directly. I get to stay at the table awhile longer, and I intend to make it count.

If the book sounds like something for you or someone you love, it releases August 25 and is available for preorder now on Amazon. There is a link in the bio. It would be an honor to have it in your homes, next to the bottles.

Remember to live. I certainly plan to.

With love and gratitude,
Hayes

Now that our 2023 vintage wines are resting safely in the cellars of our passionate collectors, we reflect on the incredible confluence of events that made 2025 a landmark year for us.

Fifteen years ago, Memento Mori began with three friends, a talented young winemaker, and a hunch that Napa Valley still had room for audacity. In 2025, we marked our 15th year in business, a milestone that feels less like a finish line and more like a beginning.

For the first time, Estate-grown fruit found its way into our Flagship Cabernet Sauvignon blend. To earn a role in a Cabernet Sauvignon blended from many of Napa Valley’s finest sites, the Estate had to be both distinct and complementary. It was. It also marked the inaugural release of Memento Mori The Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Co-founder was given a rare creative canvas with this vintage, redesigning every Memento Mori label. Inspired by the living art of our estate, the new expressions carry color, shimmer, and a tactile presence that reflects both reverence and forward momentum. They are a declaration that our most compelling chapters are yet to come.

2025 also marked our first full year honoring our Fidelium and Kaleidoscope Collectors. Their devotion and belief elevate everything. Together, we experienced the very best of Memento Mori. As these wines rest in your cellars, know that the 2023 vintage stands as a testament to where we have been and where we are going.

Our outstanding team continues to grow with the welcome addition of Adriel ‘Adi’ Trejo ()! A fourth-generation Napan, Adriel’s vision for an accessible and inclusive Napa Valley is rooted in its rich history, which he learned firsthand from his parents and grandparents.

Discerning collectors will know Adi from his tenures with Plumpjack and Dana Estates. His admiration for Memento Mori and Sam Kaplan’s wines made joining our team a natural progression. At his core, Adi is passionate about creating connections and bringing people together.

Family, travel, and an active lifestyle are just some of the ways Adi embodies Memento Mori’s ‘Remember to Live’ ethos. We are excited for all of our passionate collectors to connect with Adi in the very near future.

PURPOSE unlocks so many things - enjoyment and excitement, perseverance and possibility!

We are reminded of that each winter when Memento Mori supports for Napa in Cabo.

Along with an unbelievable lineup of vintners, and under the incredible leadership of , we poured out our very best.

The result? $2.2M raised for first-generation, low-income college students.

This January, that’s how we Remembered to Live!
