The Leviathan is a red blend created afresh each vintage, sourced from some of the most coveted vineyards in California. Each year, a percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are blended together to produce a singular wine, showcasing all the best characteristics of the vintage. Leviathan was begun in 2004 by founding winemaker Andy Erickson, former winemaker of Screamin

g Eagle Winery. Leviathan was born of a passion for blending using various grape components from highly prized vineyard sources, specifically Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc. The goal is to create one unique red wine per vintage, drawn from all four of these varieties, highlighting the best of California, and taking on a character all its own. Since then, we have slowly expanded our vineyard sources, remaining true to the goal of producing a rich, distinctive red blend every year.

The wine for adventurers. From the start, Leviathan has been guided by an exploratory spirit, looking past AVAs and traditional boundaries to find sites that bring intensity and balance. We ve always chased the fruit worth chasing across mountainside and volcanic soils throughout Northern California. A bottle built by exploration deserves to go where you go.

Red Hills AVA. High elevation changes everything here. The altitude keeps a cooler baseline, and the nights drop drastically after hot summer days. That swing forces the vines to slow down every evening, preserving acidity while sugars develop. Add intense UV at this height and the grapes build thicker skins to protect themselves. More tannin, more structure, more hang time. This is why fruit from these sites carries the depth we’re after.

Chef Kevin O’Connor sources ingredients the way we source vineyards. Growing up in the Sierra Foothills, he developed a respect for gathering, foraging, and understanding where food comes from. He cooks over open fire, bringing together California’s best seasonal offerings. We do the same across mountainside vineyards throughout Northern California. Seeking quality, respecting terroir, bringing diverse sources into one focused expression.

Red Hills obsidian. Ancient volcanic material that defines the terrain here. Sharp drainage, minimal water holding capacity, vines that have to fight for resources. This stress concentrates everything. The fruit from these soils carries that intensity straight into the blend. Terroir that works.

May’s all about vigilance in the vineyards. Shoot thinning, canopy positioning, constant monitoring. The vines are pushing growth. Our growers are out there managing it daily. Reducing yield, improving air flow, setting up the vintage. The work that matters happens now.

Budbreak doesn’t happen all at once. Some of our partner vineyards are weeks ahead, others just starting. Valley floors pushing green while mountain sites hold back. This is what sourcing from diverse Northern California terrain looks like. Different elevations, different microclimates, different timing. We’re tracking it across every site because each one contributes something different to the blend.

Twenty years. The 2023 vintage marks two decades of Leviathan. We’ve evolved from a red blend to what it was always meant to be: Cabernet Sauvignon at the core. The new label reflects that journey. Early spring across our partner vineyards. Cover crops in bloom, wildflowers scattered through the rows, budbreak approaching. Because we source from diverse sites throughout Northern California, spring doesn’t arrive all at once. We’re seeing it happen in stages across different elevations and regions. The exploration means paying attention to all of it.

Andy’s working through barrel samples. A few months in oak and each vineyard lot is showing its character differently Some are expressive early, others need more time. This is the fine-tuning stage. Assessing development, understanding contributions, mapping where the final blend might land. Early reads set the direction.
