Matt’s Wild Cherries are an heirloom vining cherry tomato that are about the size of large blueberries and small grapes. They are the sweetest and my most favorite salad mater. 😋

As the time of harvest has ended and the beds get “tucked in”, egg production also slows, so, the HugLife Flock is getting ready for the winter months of Upstate NY with some tasty high nutrition, always organic, snacks.

Here is a few tidbits on how we handle this organically…

Corn comes last in our grown season, just in time to cure and have ready throughout the winter as it helps to raise body temperature. This is also why we don’t give our flock corn in the summer months when we want to keep them cool. Chickens will generate about 10w of energy each. This is about 35 BTUs or the equivalent to a 100w lightbulb each!

Pumpkin breaks the ability for parasitic worms to attach to the intestinal wall, and molasses is a natural laxative. Together they are a powerful, natural and gut health supporting dewormer for our flock. This is something we do regularly here but especially before we are all indoors more due to the cold outside.

Herbs and plants like rosemary, lavender oregano, calendula and apple cider vinegar offer many supportive health benefits such as respiratory and gut health, anti inflammatory properties and natural pest control.

I hope everyone is ready for whatever this season brings. I’m expecting it to be as yo-yoie as it’s been through the warmer seasons.

Seed saving over coffee this morning. This perennial salvia is woodland sage and it is native to the Hudson Valley. It’s pretty happy almost anywhere. Even better, it is deer and disease resistant while attracting and supporting our pollinators.

SQUASH BLOSSOMS ARE IN!!

They are an Italian cuisine delicacy that I’ve seen referred to as, “Rome on a plate.” I’ve never been to Rome to know but I do know that they are a treat. The flower so delicate and sweet under a nice light fry and sprinkled with sea salt. Exquisite tastebud action!

We’ve been quietly working and it’s proving to be worth every bit of it! Cucumbers, beans (haricot verts and Italian Romano), black beauty zucchini and blackberries are coming!! Don’t forget we have fresh eggs daily. Come and see us Hug Life Farm for all organic and heirloom produce.
