Green Earth Harvest

Green Earth Harvest We’re a certified organic farm, growing healthy since 2002 on McDonald Farm in SE Naperville. Check us out-you’ll taste the difference!

We grow 90 varieties of veggies & herbs for our farmshare subscribers, farm to pantry program & summer farmstands. In early 2002, some friends who lived in the western suburbs of Chicago discussed their common interest in farm-fresh, locally-grown organic food, and their shared concerns about environmental sustainability. They wanted to take action on these issues and Green Earth Institute was bo

rn. Finding protected land in Naperville on which they could grow (known as The Conservation Foundation's McDonald Farm), was the perfect place to make it all happen. After 16 years of growing amazingly delicious and nutritious food for their community, the original founders, Steve Tiwald and Karen Hutt, decided to retire and asked The Conservation Foundation to continue the farm program. Green Earth Harvest is now one of 10 programs of The Conservation Foundation. We know healthy soil creates healthy plants, healthy people and ultimately a healthy community which is why we organically and sustainably grow the food that feeds you. Our dedicated crew plants, cultivates and harvests over 40 different vegetables with the goal of bringing eaters and growers together in ways that work for our community. Our farmshare program offers multiple-sized shares, weekly or every-other week pickups, two pickup days and off-farm pickups in Downers Grove, Lisle, Hinsdale, Lombard & Winfield. And, best of all, our farmshare participants always choose which veggies they take home - no set boxes. Explore and enjoy at your own pace. We grow for 700 farmshare participants in addition to our farm stand visitors and farm to pantry programs. We are proud to provide local, nutritious and delicious vegetables to our community through environmentally responsible farming practices - come join us!

With June underway, our growing season is in full swing and that means the first harvests for our Farm to Pantry initiative are happening this week! 🚜

Thanks to grants from DuPage County and Will County, along with sponsorship from local corporations and foundations, Green Earth Harvest will provide our just-harvested, certified organic produce to our neighbors facing food insecurity through our pantry partners, including Loaves and Fishes, Elmhurst-Yorkville Food Pantry, and People's Resource Center, for the fourth year.

And with expanded funding from DuPage County, our vegetables will reach 60% more pantry patrons in 2026 with partners Neighborhood Food Pantry, HCS Family Services, Roselle Food Pantry and Itasca Food Pantry!

Have you ever had Lambs Quarters? Also known as wild spinach or Chenopodium album, this leafy member of the amaranth family is native to a wide swath of the world, including the contiguous U.S. — and it grows wild here at McDonald Farm. It has a mild green flavor very similar to spinach, and can be eaten steamed, sautéed, baked, creamed (as we have pictured here)or, like Farmer Manager Russ prefers it, raw!

We're proud to grow all the organic vegetables you expect, but we're extra proud of the veggie adventures you don't expect, either — and we hope you'll give it a try at your next farm subscriber pickup!
