It’s almost time for the first race of the Triple Crown- the Kentucky Derby.
No Derby party is complete without the signature drink - the Mint Julep
What you need:
A sprig or two of fresh mint
1/2 oz of simple syrup
2 oz of your favorite bourbon but honestly any favorite whiskey can work.
Crushed ice
8oz tumbler glass or a silver julep cup
What you do:
Add simple syrup to your glass.
Add 6-8 mint leaves and muddle them with a spoon or muddler to release the essence
Fill the glass with crushed ice
Pour in your choice of whiskey or bourbon
Stir and serve
This is a southern beverage. And like all things southern, they like it sweet. So if you like it sweet , add more simple. If you like things a little more dry, pick a good Rye.
Serving a group and want to make up a batch ….
Mint infused simple :
1c water + 1c sugar + 4 sprigs of mint
Heat in a sauce pan to a low simmer , remove from heat, remove mint, and cool back to room temperature . (Yields about 8-12 servings )
Make sure you save some fresh mint for garnish on top .
