We recently sold most of our calves, finished our pigs, processed our turkeys, and are just about done lambing. In a way it's the end of the year for us. Looking back, it's been a brutal winter. Our calves didn't perform quite as expected and in processing the turkeys you could see a toll of the long winter on them, not to mention the backbreaking labor of dealing with the snow.
Here's some of our weather facts from the previous 12 months:
1. Hottest summer on record (should note, all 4 summers we spent in Basin were still hotter than the one here)
2. Coldest Vernal winter since 1985
3. Snowiest winter in history of Vernal
4. Longest stretch in Vernal without 40 degree day (thanksgiving-march 11) and 50 degree day
5. 2nd coldest February and March (1933 and 1952)
6. Average snow depth this winter (dec-march) was over 20 inches
7. Coldest Winter I have ever experienced
8. In the last 12 months we've broken 2 extreme droughts. Last spring in Wyoming and this winter in Utah. The map shows march-july in Wyoming and july-march.. lots of water!
In July we moved from Wyoming to Vernal. It wasn't the main reason for the move, but we were excited for milder summers and winters after spending most of our married life in the coldest region of Montana and coldest region in Wyoming. We didn't realize we would experience by far the harshest winter of our lives and a winter much colder than our previous homes in Wyoming and Montana.
That all being said we're grateful for the blessings and safety we've experienced this long winter.
Looking forward to some warm weather and summer fishing and travel.
