On this Culinarians' Day let me tell you about this amazing cookbook, Baking in the American South. It has deep history. stunning photography, recipes for things you will want to try even if you are as Northern as it gets. It is one of the best books I have ever worked on. I am so very proud of it. Stupidly proud.
This is not a fancy cookbook with techniques that scare you. This is a down home, straight forward, grandma-reminiscent cookbook that will speak to your heart. Anne Byrne's amazing dedication to bringing history alive through recipes and stories captivates readers while educating them in beautiful, subtle ways. You will find yourself wondering how your antecedents made cornbread or if your parents bought the pound cake that aided civil rights.
Students of history will love the stories that are backed by literal years of research. Culinarians will love it for the well of recipes that are both historic and nouveau, for the nod to our ancestors from new Southern chefs who share what essential Southern food means to them. I cannot say enough. It really is that good--for both new cooks and seasoned chefs. There is something for everyone.
It has a sturdy price tag of $45, but is has more than 500 pages, 200 recipes, stories you will want to share with others, and mouthwatering photography that will have you revisiting it over and over. Please consider preordering it! You will be glad you did. And call me when you make a recipe so we can discuss!
