Juneteenth615 is built by the community and sustained by the community.

Every year, this celebration creates space for us to gather, remember, dance, eat, learn, honor our ancestors, celebrate Black joy, and keep the story of freedom alive in Nashville.

But a celebration this powerful does not happen by chance.

It takes resources.
It takes planning.
It takes people.
It takes love poured into the details.

Before Juneteenth615 became what it is today, there was vision.

There was commitment.
There was community.
There was a deep belief that Black freedom deserved to be remembered, celebrated, protected, and passed on.

Today, we honor Baba Kwame Lillard, the father of Juneteenth615.

His work helped create more than an event. It helped build a sacred space for remembrance, education, culture, celebration, and community gathering in Nashville.

Because of his vision, generations have been able to come together to honor our ancestors, celebrate Black liberation, uplift Black joy, and keep the meaning of Juneteenth alive in our city.

Juneteenth615 stands on the foundation he helped build.

As we continue expanding this celebration, we do so with gratitude for the elders, organizers, culture keepers, and freedom dreamers who made this possible.

Baba Kwame Lillard’s legacy reminds us that freedom is not only something we inherit.

It is something we protect.
It is something we teach.
It is something we celebrate.
It is something we carry forward.

We honor him.
We thank him.
We continue the work.

Freedom did not end with emancipation. In Nashville, it became education, entrepreneurship, faith, public service, music, art, and community building.

From R.H. Boyd’s influence in Black religious publishing to Ella Shepard’s role in helping shape Nashville’s Music City legacy, these six Black Nashvillians left an impact that still speaks to who we are today.

As we celebrate Juneteenth615, we honor the people who turned freedom into progress and built pathways for future generations.

From freedom announced in 1865, to Black progress demonstrated at the Negro Building during Nashville’s 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition, to freedom expanded in 2026, this year’s celebration honors the legacy of those who came before us while creating space for the culture, creativity, music, food, business, family, and joy that continue to move us forward.

This year, we gather at Centennial Park for a living cultural experience rooted in history and built for community.

Freedom is not static.
Freedom creates.
Freedom gathers.
Freedom builds.
Freedom expands.
