I had another entrepreneur recently ask me how I balance my time? How I cram everything into 24 hour days x 7 days per week? For me, since the beginning of the farm I knew that in every season something had to be sacrificed. Many seasons I sacrificed health and family time chasing wealth (really just trying to keep the business afloat). To be great at anything, you are almost sure to neglect something else. It’s extremely difficult to be a successful entrepreneur without sacrificing other key parts of your life. There was a long stretch of time that I worked 5am till 8pm. That meant I missed all 3 family meals and lots of activities when the boys were young. I can’t get that time back, but i knew that I couldn’t give them the future I wanted for them without missing out on lots of things in their childhood. I have regrets on some of that. I could have been better. But, they can count on picking whatever college they want or career they want to chase, and money in their account so that they can figure out who they want to be as they enter adulthood. Maybe someday they’ll understand why dad wasn’t there at every game and dinner.
This past year as my oldest boy became a senior in high school, I decided to start sacrificing work (wealth) and make sure I didn’t miss those last days of his childhood. It was one of my better decisions. I delegate more now. I workout almost every day and have been home for dinner almost every night. Penelope, my red headed firecracker expects me to be in the driveway at 6:35 every night to play soccer. It’s our time together.
I say all this because I know I’ve got a lot of other small businesses that follow me. They are not sure how to make it all happen. Everyone has to find the right balance for themselves and it’s gonna change every year. If you are not good with that, then running your own business is not for you. And that is perfectly fine. There have been a lot of times I would have liked to have a clock in and out time and know that a paycheck was waiting on me after my 40 hours. Instagram is made to share the highlights. It doesn’t tell the whole story.
Farmstand and flower fields open 8-6 today.
