🖤 Farm Life Update! 🐣😂

I'm so far behind on catching everyone up, but here's two updates!

Meet our newest addition... **Rudy!** 🖤

Rudy has officially decided she'd rather be a mom than lay eggs, so she's gone broody. 😂

The funny part? We actually got Rudy because when we first started chickens, one of the kids thought **every hen hatched her own eggs.** It was absolutely heartbreaking explaining that most breeds don't anymore. 🥹

So when we went to pick up our F5 AC Olive Egger, they happened to have Rudy, who had just gone broody. It felt like perfect timing, and now the kids finally get to experience watching a hen raise chicks naturally. ❤️

When we brought Rudy home, we quietly slid **two trial hatching eggs** under her. At the same time, I put these **three project eggs** into the incubator as a clean-out trial to make sure everything was successful. One of the eggs (Pecky Sue's 🥚) ended up being infertile, but the other eggs are looking great!

The timing should work out almost perfectly...

🤫 When these incubator chicks hatch, the plan is to **sneak them under Rudy during the night** so she wakes up thinking she hatched **five babies instead of two.** 😂🐥

Now comes the hard part...

I have a mountain of data to collect before I can pull off my little midnight chick mission. 😂 Thankfully, I've got a little time before hatch day.

I'm also trialing a couple of other things for **The Feral Vantablack Project™**, so I'm hoping the cameras catch details I might miss while running around the farm. 🤞🏽📹

And yes... before anyone says anything... 🤣

The handwriting on my eggs is getting progressively worse.

Last night's lockdown happened at almost midnight and looked something like this:

Movement✅
Scribble a draw down line✅
Lockdown✅
Increase humidity✅
Everything stabilized✅
Go to bed 😴😂✅

Around here, that's considered organized.

🐣🖤 LESS THAN ONE WEEK UNTIL OUR FIRST BC1 TRIAL HATCH! 🖤🐣

This is one of the biggest milestones yet for The Feral Vantablack Project™, and I'm beyond excited to finally share what we've been working toward!

For those new to the project, here's the process:
🧬 Step 1: Pair an Ayam Cemani with a Leghorn.
🐥 Step 2: The offspring are our F1 Zombies—50%

Ayam Cemani and 50% Leghorn. One of those special girls is Lac (Lacy), whose name comes from L = Leghorn and AC = Ayam Cemani.

🖤 Step 3: To continue increasing fibromelanosis while preserving genetic diversity, Lac was backcrossed to two of our F4 AC Olive Eggers, Mulberry and Locus.

Now the countdown begins...

🥚 In less than ONE WEEK, our first BC1 trial hatch should begin!

Every hatch is a lesson in genetics. Every chick helps us better understand inheritance, fibromelanosis, egg color, and the incredible variation that can appear in a single breeding. Some chicks may be darker, some lighter, some patterned, and some may surprise us in ways we never expected.

That's what makes this project so exciting. We're not just hatching chicks—we're documenting, learning, preserving, and building something generation by generation.

🖤 Farm kids for the win! 🥚🐓

Yesterday, the kids sold **4 dozen eating eggs**, and I don't know who was more excited... them or me. 🥹

One thing we've always done is let the kids be part of the farm, not just watch from the sidelines. They help collect eggs, take care of the animals, and pitch in wherever they can.

So whenever they sell eating eggs, **100% of the money goes directly to them**... even the extra tips people generously leave. 💚

Watching their faces light up knowing they earned that money through their own hard work was absolutely priceless.

I'm so proud of them and incredibly thankful for everyone who supports our little farm. Every carton purchased doesn't just support The Grund—it encourages some pretty amazing young farmers, too. 🖤🐓🥚

Thank you to everyone who bought eggs yesterday. Very exciting day for the kids! 🥰
