This is what the aftermath of a massive data-collection hatch looks like. 😂🐣 Five incubators, first-aid kit out, dividers wrecked, index cards everywhere—and a 93.1% hatch rate (27/29), still above my lowest ever at 92%.

Now I’m tracking 3 phenotypes to see if I can predict s*x in my developing Vanta line. 👀🧬

😴 I'm running on fumes and approximately one brain cell 😂

2 possible assists needed. Unfortunately cannot open the incubator at the moment especially with more than two external pips. My NICU incubator is occupied and the final egg in there has not hatched so I cannot open it and use my micro NICU set up inside of it.

Everyone did decide to pip at the same time and my stress skyrocketed but they have been patiently waiting for me and hatching respectfully at the right time 😂
So I've been collecting as much data as possible.

Also realizing that I have two tests due by midnight ( ... Just a heads up I'm struggling 😭)

This hatch has been astonishing to watch. The genetic out comes area so interesting and the nerd in me is so excited to learn more 🧬🐣

Also probably need an assistant to balance social media, data collecting, homeschooling, farm work and college while doing a high stakes data collecting egg hatch. Sorry it will have to be a unpaid internship for the moment... 😂😭

Running on fumes over here, so I’m appreciating AI for helping me turn chicken genetics into normal-human language today. 😂🧬

Before I show you one of the Vanta Eclipse chicks, here’s the simple version:

FM (fibromelanosis) is the genetics behind the extra-dark pigmentation we can see in the skin, legs and other tissues. But FM doesn’t work completely by itself — other genes inherited from Mom and Dad can change how strongly that pigmentation actually shows.

Then you also have feather-color genes. White or very light feather genetics can hide the darker feather colors underneath, so a chick may hatch looking yellow or pale even though there are darker genetics hiding in the background.

Basically: what a chick looks like on hatch day doesn’t necessarily tell you everything it genetically carries. 🐣🧬

That’s why these Vanta Eclipse chicks are going to be VERY interesting to document as they grow.

Pulling all nighter after 4 hours of sleep the night before 😴

This is not a normal hatch this is high stakes data so sleeping is not an option on the table. All data must be recorded 😁

🐣 IT’S OFFICIALLY HATCH DAY.

The first signs are here, the first-aid kit is out and ready, documentation is starting a little later than planned… and my nerves are officially on the fritz. 😂😭

From here, it’s notes, photos, chick IDs, hatch observations and trying to keep up with who is doing what without losing my mind.

Everything is ready. Now I just need these little ones to cooperate. 🤞🐣

Let the hatch-day chaos begin.

Lockdown data is officially jotted down. 🐣📓

The dividers arrived fashionably late 😂, so I made a quick adjustment during lockdown to keep each group separated and the data as clean as possible.

29 eggs went into lockdown. Unfortunately, one appears to have stopped developing around Day 16.

And because this hatch needed one more plot twist, an incubator bottle fell and cracked one egg. 😭 The membrane was not punctured, so I left it alone and positioned the cracked side safely while I monitor it closely.

Now everything is documented, divided, and ready. 🤞🐣

Quick hatch update: this one is going to require a LOT from me, and there’s a real chance I may go a little quiet during hatch while I keep up with everything.

I’ll be documenting things like:
• Hatch times
• Chick ID & parentage
• Wet/dry appearance
• Fibro, toe, wing & color traits
• Weights, bands & follow-up changes

Because of that, no chicks will be sold or given away until they are at least one week old so I can finish the documentation properly.

If I disappear for a bit, I promise I’m probably buried in chicks, notes, pictures and approximately zero brain cells. 😂🐣📓
