Photo dump. I kept taking pictures but kept forgetting to post them on Instagram or FB. So I decided to hatch more chicks. 15 out of 22 hatched, much better than last time. I was a bit worried that the two groups of chicks would go at it in the brooder room but all was peaceful.

The 5 chicks in the Pallet Coop are fiesty now that have space. If i turn off the chicken fence or a minute to go in they are squeezing themselves thru the fence exploring. We put them outside on Saturday evening and today is Tuesday. I hate that we lost one of the greys. 😭 We'll be getting a tarp to close the openings at the top (think the space of a pallet on top of another pallet).

Hardest part of raising chickens is underestimating how stupid they are without a drop of survival instincts. We lost a chicken overnight because it got out of its coop enclosure and most likely got taken by an owl. (Pallet coop enclosed with chicken but a small section not covered surrounded by electric fencing.)

Chick update! I kept meaning to post the pictures to Instagram alas...so the first batch of photos is them a few days old and the last half is today's about 2 weeks old. Aren't they cute!? We had 6 break their shell and live (out of 22 eggs). We had 4 die in the shell and the rest didn't develop or weren't fertile. I decide to incubate more hopefully I'll have better success now that I know how to control the humidity better. (I named the bronze chick Felix, iykyk)

Spring has officially come to South Texas...the mesquite trees are leafing out and that means I can start planting in the ground!! Most of my tomatoes are at least a week out (I have roma and beefsteak) me eggplants need more time and my bell peppers haven't even sprouted 😭. I brought my squash seedlings out on the worst day...when it was in the 90s and they didn't survive the shock (one did) so I had to reseed.

We've got 4 now! One just a few minutes old. I was able to catch it on video, I'll see about posting that as a reel. We have two more eggs that have popped. We put in 22 in 20 days ago.

Did a thing 21 days ago and forgot to put it on Ista...lol we got a incubator and are hatching our own chicks! And today they are started hatching! A bit early...just in time for their fresh clean brooder. Luckily they can stay in the incubator for a day or two to dry off, because I forgot to buy chick feed!

Update! Been a crazy few weeks!! (April was crazy busy with Easter celebrations-i ran two big Easter events for my church). Chicken saga edition. So the chickies grew up and feathered out, the Blackies graduated to the troop coop, and the chickies went to their old coop. Alas, it was a very hot day and I was out all afternoon. And we lost 6 of the chickies (out of 10), they were totally baked 😱🥵. So I had to buy more chicks. These are Blue Jersey Giants, and I got 7. We also installed electric fencing around the troop coop. AND we got our first egg!

I'll post newer pics of the Chickies. I have only one Isa Browns left and 3 Buff Orpingtons. 2 of the buffs are going to a friend though.

Spring garden! Finally got everything planted. Between the business of the Easter season (I ran two Easter events at my church) and my frozen shoulder, I just got my luffa plants into the ground. Hopefully third times the charm and I get some luxurious growth and a bunch of sponges. I put a ton of mulch down, hoping that's the magic ingredient. My tomatoes and zucchini are looking great in their shade cloth and I am spying babies on both plants. The green beans are LOVING the container pots, I've never seen their leaves that big. I am growing cowpeas again to help grow the soil and feed my animals. Not sure if I'm gonna plant more in the garden, just be lazy a toss them out there to help build up the soil. I lost a bunch of oak trees to the cold (and my frozen shoulder kept me from making sure they were overwintered properly). And blueberries are back again...surviving.

Got tiny chicks! 5 Isa Browns and 5 Brown Leghorns (the lighter colored chicks) pullets. 2 are going to my friend Anne and the remaining 8 will debut as my newest BApop group (Bexarly Acres pop).

Will take suggestions for a name for this group. Also should name the other older group of 5. There's 2 roosters and 3 hens.
