Happy Hill Top Hens We raise beautiful Cortunix Quail and Heritage breed chickens (Salmon Faverolles, Light Brown Leghorns and White Dorkings).

I started two incubators full of Cortunix Quail eggs a couple days ago. I still have an incubator with chicken eggs going which are due to hatch in a few days. If you want heritage breed chickens, I’ll have more White Dorkings, Light Brown Leghorns, and Salmon Faverolles. After this hatch, if I don’t have any more orders, all my incubators will be working on quail. Some of these Cortunix eggs are from my own eggs and some, for diversity, are from our friends at Feathertide Hobby Farm.

Today I was working in my office when someone brought me a baby goose they had found in the ditch beside the road going past our blackberry field. They knew I had geese and ducks and thought it might be one of mine. It was not but it definitely needed a mom so I put it in a brooder. My baby geese are a few weeks old and this was a new baby. I do have poultry of all sorts sitting on nests because it’s the season. I have five hens sitting with a couple of them doubled up like sister wives. I have two duck sisters sharing a nest and I have a duck and a Muscovy sharing a nest. One of my goslings from last year decided it was time to start a family and she started sitting on eggs on a nest she built under my front porch. She was doing a fabulous job and wasn’t budging from her nest at all. Finally when it was almost hatching time she got up for a quick break and then went back under the porch only to sit on a muscovy nest. So she was starting all over, all her previous dedication was wasted. Today her adopted babies started hatching. Too many to keep up with because 3 wandered off while she was still on the nest with others hatching. We scooped them up and put them in the brooder with the lonely lost gosling. All is well and they have snuggled up under the heat together like siblings. I sold a dozen Salmon Faverolle chicks today and restarted an incubator full of Faverolle and Dorking eggs. I have several incubators going so if you need chicks, let me know. (Light Brown Leghorn, White Dorking and Salmon Faverolle). I have a few Sebastopol mix goslings available. I am keeping most of my goose hatched Muscovy.

Yesterday was hatch day! Went into brooder today. Mostly Salmon Faverolles this time. There is one lone little Light Brown Leghorn.

Look at these beautiful little girls! They are registered Barbados Blackbelly Sheep, a heritage breed on the Livestock Conservancy priority list. Bonnie and Belle are the first step in our goal to raise this breed. You will get to meet them at Hill Top Berry Farm Winery and Meadery soon but they are staying in the barn for a few days while they get used to being away from their mother.
