Moving a bee yard to another location is no small task! We are having a new septic system installed and the only place the health department wants it right where our largest apiary is. Naturally. When moving the girls it is always done best at night when they are SUPPOSED TO BE in bed. Well sonโ€™s we are in a dearth and it was drizzly outside they were bored and hanging out on the fronts of the boxes. Add the fact they do not like to be disturbed at night and you have a highly exciting job to do! Josh only had on his jacket and veil with jeans and ended up with bees in his jeans and jacket! We estimated that he was stung around 25 times. I had on a full suit and still got stung 4 times. Twice in the forearm and twice in my ARMPIT! Luckily we are done until we move to Virginia!

It's one of the most common questions beekeepers hear.

The answer isn't as simple as many people think.

Sugar syrup isn't meant to replace flowers.

It's a management tool.

Some of the most common reasons include:
Preventing colonies from starving during a nectar dearth.
Helping new packages, swarms, or splits build comb and become established.
Stimulating brood rearing when building colony populations.
Supporting weak colonies that don't have enough food stores.
Replacing harvested surplus honey when a beekeeper determines additional food is needed.

No.

Every beekeeper has different goals.

Some manage for maximum honey production and harvest as much surplus honey as their colonies can responsibly produce.

Some rarely harvest honey at all because they simply enjoy keeping bees.

Most beekeepers fall somewhere in the middle.

There isn't one management style that fits everyone.

Climate, nectar flows, colony health, experience, and personal goals all influence those decisions.

Here at Sweet Stingers Honey, we'll feed colonies if they need it.

At the same time, we try to leave plenty of honey behind for the bees.

We aren't interested in letting colonies starve when we can step in and help.

In many areas, forage isn't as abundant as it once was, and weather has become less predictable.

Healthy bees will always be our priority.

Beekeeping isn't about finding one "right" way.

It's about understanding your bees, your environment, and your goals.

Different management styles can all produce healthy colonies when practiced responsibly.

The important question isn't whether someone feeds.

It's whether they're making thoughtful decisions that put the long-term health of their bees and the environment first.

We've found many customers never really question if we feed or not.

We have found customers want to know how we manage colonies, how much honey we leave for the bees, whether native pollinators are considered, and what values guide the apiary.

Everyone has different priorities, but we've found that customers who share our approach often become long-term supporters.

At the end of the day, honey bees are managed livestock. Whether we like that term or not, they depend on beekeepers for much of their care.

And regardless of the size of the operation, most beekeepers genuinely want what's best for the bees in their care.

Do you feed your colonies?
If so, when do you normally start feeding, and what factors help you decide?

If you appreciate real-world beekeeping, honest perspectives, and lessons that go beyond the noise, follow along. We share from our yards almost daily.

Friends,

Thank you so much for your support over the years. With that being said, the Wandering Bee Farm is wandering south and relocating to Fincastle, Virginia! We have LOTS of honey that we need to sell before we move and we would like to sell some bees! We have a limited number of 5 frames nucs for $180 and 10 frames of bees for $280 (bring your own wooden ware for the 10 frame) available. We will post any available hive components soon. Our farm is also for sale though not formally listed with an agent yet. Let me know if you are interested in any of what I have to offer!

Much love and peace to all,

Josh and Amanda McWilliams
