Plum Creek Ranch - Premium Angus Beef

Plum Creek Ranch - Premium Angus Beef We are a family farm in east central Kansas, our goal is to provide your family with the best tasting, most tender, juiciest beef you've ever had.

All of our cattle are born on our ranch, pasture raised, and grain finished. At Plum Creek Ranch we strive to produce a nutritious, high quality product. We work daily with our cattle to ensure their health and well-being. Our calves are Angus sired, and born on the ranch just east of Emporia. To preserve the tenderness and quality of the beef, we raise our cattle without additional hormones. They

are grass raised, and grain finished with corn grown on the ranch. The calves are guaranteed less than 24 months of age. We process through local lockers where the meat is dry aged for 14-21 days; this is the last step in ensuring that the beef will express it's exceptional flavor and tenderness.

Meet M143 our newest boy on the ranch...
The quickest way to improve (or destroy) your herd is through your herd sires. One bull breeds many females in his time here on our ranch. We have to be very selective of our bulls.
1. They have to produce females that we want to keep in our herd; have good sound feet, deep bodies for carrying baby calves, and many other traits important for female and calf health. When we keep a replacement heifer(young female) we want her to stay in the herd for many years.
2. Our bulls have to produce beef that our customers (and our own families) want to eat. Carcass traits are highly heritable. So we select bulls that will improve our beef; larger ribeyes, greater marbling, tender, and less backfat.

Everyday is different around here, but our goals never change. Goals: care for our animals and our land.
Yesterday I found this 6 day old baby off by herself, standing up but looking sick. At 9am I took her temperature, she had a significant fever. I treated her for scours (bad stomach ache) with antibiotics and gave her some medicine to help reduce her fever and take away the aches (like Tylenol). At noon I came back to give her electrolytes for dehydration. At 2 I found her laying on her side, looking like she was going to die. Doc (vet) said I did all I can do, but wait. So with the severe weather coming in we decided to get her and her momma in the barn to help keep her as comfortable as possible. (Glad we did, it POURED here for 20 min or so.) Last night she looked a little better, but still not out of the woods. This morning I am happy to report, she is up, nursing, and behaving again like a healthy baby calf. Hallelujah! We don't always have the best outcomes, but we do everything we can to care for these beautiful creatures.

Prescribed burning is how we maintain the natural prairie landscape. This prairie is native and without burning practices it would be overcome by woody species, the trees and shrubs choke out the grass and destroy the native grass.
I like to wonder how many acres of the prairie would burn after a lightening strike. Big grass for miles would burn, (no fences, no roads) I supposed until it came to a stream. Then a month later the bison would move in eating that lush green grass full of nutrients...grass only a ruminant animal (bison, cattle, deer, goats, sheep) can truly appreciate.

Kansas is a funny place. One day you are prepping for a blizzard, rolling out bedding hay, hopping the mommas don't calve in the freezing wind. Then 2 days later it feels like summer. Thankfully, only 1 cow calved during the worst of the weather and being a veteran cow, baby is doing just fine. Now that it is sunny and 79, the calves seem to be coming fast.
It is a joy to come to work; listen to the frogs and birds, and take care of our cattle. And bring the next generation along, to teach them the simple joy of our work.

With school out for conferences we were able to get some of the fall calves preconditioned with a little extra help. He's only 8 but he sure did a good job walking the calves up the lane.
Preconditioning is important to keep the calves healthy before weaning. By administering vet recommended vaccines we reduce the risk of them getting life threatening diseases and in turn, this reduces the need for use of antibiotic treatment.
