Loretta is due to calve within the next month, but recently developed a vaginal prolapse and needed a trip to the vet. Before her appointment, Dr. Grandpa Rasmussen cleaned the pr*****ed tissue daily and gently massaged it back into place to help keep the tissue healthy and viable while we waited for veterinary treatment.
At the vet, the prolapse was repaired and prolapse pins were placed to help hold everything in position until she calves.
Now our focus is on aftercare. We’ll be keeping fly spray on her, monitoring the pin sites closely for signs of infection, and giving another dose of LA-300 in three days as directed by our veterinarian.
About a week after she calves, the pins will need to be removed. Unfortunately, vaginal prolapse has a hereditary component and often recurs, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on Loretta and making future management decisions with her long-term health and welfare in mind.
Farm life is full of beautiful moments, but it also comes with hard ones. We’re grateful for good veterinarians, Dr. Grandpa Rasmussen’s watchful care, and the opportunity to be stewards of these animals every day.
Here’s hoping Loretta has a smooth calving and welcomes a healthy calf in the coming weeks.
