Like many PNW outfits, we have transitioned over the years to a mostly black angus herd. With the exception of a dozen cows belonging to a rather unruly family member, most of our herd is dark hided. There are still a few what we call “throw backs” like this red heifer here and looks like she is going to keep a little color in the herd with her calf.

Not the prettiest pictures but can’t say it isn’t authentic family kitchen food! We always cook up a bit of our ground beef to know exactly what we are selling folks. It’s lean and that’s how we like it. A bit of Worcestershire and some Lawry’s seasoning for cooking up and it’s ready to top some baked potatoes. How do you like to cook up your ground beef? Do you like it lean or with a bit more tallow? (Should have used the cast iron pan for aesthetics but that meant doing dishes…)

First calf was born to an ancient old lady of a cow today when we brought the herd home for sorting before the drive to the calving grounds. Little tyke seems a bit premature but got some colostrum in it so we shall see how it goes.

Most of the calves are coming up on 30 days weaned. This is our first year weaning all the herd and not just shipping the calves off their mamas. It’s been a learning experience to put it mildly. Calves are feeling good and happy to be out of the mud!

Things have been busy on the ranch! Roundup and weaning time is in full swing and the fall weather is certainly upon us. Still have a few head out in the woods but now that the cold weather is turning the cows are getting a bit more willing to come home.
