We needed a better education on what the American Revolution was all about. One of the most quoted reasons to have had the revolution was, "No taxation without representation". It is totally true other than as taught and to most people, we emphasize taxation as the issue we think we fought for. We didn't actually fight for any issue. NO!!!! The key word we need to emphasize is “representation”. The whole purpose of the revolution was policy, the right of the average citizen to be represented in the government. There were a lot of other issues of the time. If you read what the founding fathers were concerned about, it was “Liberty.” Liberty is not the same as freedom. It is the ability to make the issues we are governed by which is what the congress is supposed to be doing.
Our liberties are what is slipping away by letting the President make policy. The Constitution only allows the President to make sure the policy set by congress is followed. Our congress is more to blame. We need to fire the whole lot and get some with backbone. We will be the problem if we keep re-electing a congress that lets the President do whatever.
James Madison commented that a democracy was messy. Lots of people with lots of views. A King is much more efficient, but you have no say in how you are treated. We are getting a sample of what it was like back then. King George was a jerk!
250 years have proven we can do it, we just need to get back to the center and listen to each other, both sides, and compromise. Our gutless congress would react if there was enough pressure from all their constituents to hammer on them day and night. Next election you are going away, politically as in loss of liberty, if this mess continues.
One thing I would like to see changed. I was in Washington and talked to both Senators and got the lecture on we are not a democracy, we are a republic. It is true we elect them and they do whatever they want. We need to add one thing to our constitution to make it somewhat of a democracy. Add an amendment where by popular vote, we can fire any elected official without any interference of congress or a political party.
