The Maple Lodge is a family-owned business located in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania that specializes in producing 100% pure maple syrup products. The original 58 acre Maple Lodge began producing maple syrup not long after it’s construction in the late 1870’s/early 1880’s and ceased production when the property changed hands just before the turn of the 20th century. In 2009, we became the proud new owners and after some much needed TLC, we tapped our first 100 trees in 2012 with the help of Julie’s Great Uncle Andy. Adjacent parcels were added to the farm in 2020 and 2021 bringing The Maple Lodge to a total of 236 acres.

Year after year West Central Equipment shows up at the Westmoreland Fair to support the annual Livestock Sale. Their continued support demonstrates their commitment to the future of agriculture in Westmoreland County as the animals they buy fund the future of these budding farmers. They are also strong contributors to Westmoreland County 4-H making access to camps and events possible for hundreds of kids each year. We are truly lucky to have such an amazing company backing our kids. Thank you West Central Equipment and the entire Slezak family!

Day 9 of the Westmoreland Fair was probably the craziest day of all. Livestock Sale Day! The morning started out with Jake being named the Jr Master Stockman Champion for Poultry and Eli was the Jr Master Stockman Reserve Champion for Poultry. After that it was a flurry of activity preparing animals for the sale ring. The kids would like to thank their buyers and everyone that came out to support them all week. The boys pour a ton of energy into their livestock projects so the community support is greatly appreciated.

Day 7 at Westmoreland Fair with moving in chickens and turkeys and guess what.... more washing. They need to look their best for their big day.

Tonight was also a family favorite... the 4-H Benefit Auction. Donations are made and auctioneers donate their time to this amazing cause. The Maple Lodge LLC is a proud Showcase Sponsor with contributions of maple syrup and other items. This year the kids also donated a pen of 3 meat chickens that they raised as they are learning the importance of giving back.

The auction was also extra special as Eli practiced his auctioning skills with Bill Frye and sold a bench!

Day 6 of the Westmoreland Fair was more chicken and turkey washing at home. Wash, rinse, repeat! Then off to the fair for Eli to compete in 3 public speaking contests in the junior division with topics of the history of auctioning, how to make a presentation sandwich, and what my market steer taught me this year...3 blue ribbons!

Then spending the evening cheering on friends at the Market Hog Show.

Day 5 at the fair started off at home with bathing of chickens and turkeys to bring to the fair. Yes I said bathing chickens and turkeys. Once clean we wrap them in towels and set them in the sun to dry. When they are ready they just get up and walk out of their towels. It is hysterical!!!

Then off to the fair to spend time with friends and cheer on the sheep showman!

Day 4 was a whirlwind day with a start at the Market Goat show to cheer on friends and hand out ribbons... one of Jake's favorite fair activities. The day was full of prep for the steer show with more washing and drying of Frank and Carl. The show brought ribbons in both showmanship and market for both boys. Jake placed 1st in his age group showmanship class and made it to the final drive.. first year showing! Pretty amazing considering he can barely see over the steer that weighs 1,110 pounds.

Eli brought home the Daily Weight Gain Runner Up Banner. This award measures and recognizes how you turn feed inputs into meat outputs over a period of time. Steers were all weighted in on the same scales on November 16 and re-weighed on August 22. A calculation is then done to calculate the average daily weight gain. Over the 279 day window Frank did a good job packing on the pounds with a daily weight gain of 2.98 pounds! Good genetics and a well rounded feed program at Heritage Hill Farms were primary drivers for this. Grateful the kids are being taught these skills through this project! Shout out to County Commissioner Ted Kopas for sponsoring the award as well as all the other sponsors.

Thank you to all our friends that came out to see Eli and Jake. We were blown away by your support. Family isn't defined by blood alone.... it is people who care and show up over and over with unconditional love and support. Thank you for being there for them!
