Man, it’s been pretty darn chilly these last few days! I think it’s safe to say that I can no longer pretend Winter isn’t creeping in. The cranes are slowly flying south, our horses are sporting fluff, and our pasture grass is fading. Though, I’m glad there isn’t any snow….yet (knock on wood).

Are you ready for Winter?

Clayton Pederson, a Wisconsin Cowboy, passed away on September 29, 2021. His family made a generous donation in his honor to Rocky Fellow Horse Sanctuary.

Second to the Lord, Clayton loved horses. Since a young man into his 80s, he had horses in his life. For many years he boarded and trained horses for others, often to the point where his children would be able to ride them as well. (Although, they hit
the dirt a time or two also.) Through this he experienced many different personalities of horses, as much as human personalities. He always belonged to a Saddle Club, where he rode with others in horse shows and competitions,
developing lifelong friends. Many people who had horses in the area or who bought a new horse would ask Clayton to ride the horse, helping others in their enjoyment of horses as well. Many can relate a horse experience they had with
Clayton. The last time he rode he was 80 and he got bucked off. Didn't get hurt, rode the horse home, but decided he would enjoy horses from the ground from then on. Throughout his life he was able to experience the Cowboy life by visiting
his son in Montana, Duke Pederson, who has carried on the Cowboy heritage Clayton started.

Saddle up Clayton!

Please keep Clayton’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We cannot express how thankful we are to have been chosen to honor this wonderful man.

Unfortunately, the Amish gelding never made it to our Sanctuary. He collapsed and wasn’t able to rise, and so the kindest option was to let him go. While I wish we could have given him a chance at a new start we are glad that he is no longer suffering. Hug your horses a little extra tight tonight in honor of his life.

Resident update: Jed

As most of you know, Jed was a nameless Amish buggy horse who broke down in front of our Sanctuary during the early hours of October 14th 2019. He had blood pouring from his swollen knees, a depleted body, and eyes that emanated defeat. I offered cash to the gentleman on the spot, who said he wasn’t his owner. They told me to tie “it” to a tree overnight and that they would be back in the morning. I offered to stable him and trailer him home so they wouldn’t have to drag him behind another buggy. Thankfully, they accepted. I spent hours with him. Carefully stroking and reassuring him that I would see him again. That morning, I wept as we loaded him into our trailer. He softly stared me as if he knew I needed comfort. What a blessed soul. Here he is, suffering. Truly suffering but wanted to bring me comfort. We had to wait a week until they called us with news that they tried to hitch him several more times - and he refused to move. With that, they accepted my offer and we brought our boy home. Forever.

Almost a year into his rehabilitation, he suffered a catastrophic injury to his neck in a freak pasture accident. The wound was so large and so horrendous that I nor our vet had ever seen anything like it. Fortunately, we have been blessed with the most amazing Veterinarian and team. They are the unsung heroes of Jed’s recovery.

He is now 100% healed and enjoying his retirement. He is a permanent resident of our Sanctuary and continues to inspire all who meet him. Jed is a quiet guy who enjoys roaming the pasture with a select few friends, hanging out with his love Twister, and meditating with me on the hill. He is a true testament of never giving up no matter how bleak the circumstances.

Jed will be our “special guest” for New Auburn’s 2022 Jamboree Days.

Sanctuary resident update: Lyra

Lyra is a permanent resident of Rocky Fellow and continues to be an inspiration to all who meet her. She adores attention, hugs, children, scratches under her mane, laying down and napping with people, and most of all…boots. This girl LOVES licking boots. Why? We have no idea! But it sure makes her day when we wear our muck boots.

She has come such a long way and under tough circumstances. Through it all she has never given up and put faith in her people to do what’s best. Regardless of her start, she has always radiated love and warmth. We can’t wait to share her with the community next year ❤️

My favorite time of the day, the morning roll call!

There’s nothing better than a herd of horses happily running to greet you! 🐎💨

This is our daily check in. It’s when we fly spray, give medications, and overall health checks are done. I personally love taking the time to connect and enjoy their company. We are truly blessed with such a loving herd. Their happiness fuels us.

So if you live nearby and hear this sound, just know that it isn’t a Bigfoot hollering. It’s me calling the crew! 🤣

What is your favorite morning routine? We’d love hear about what sparks joy in your life!

The lovers, Twister and Jed, enjoying each other’s company this beautiful crisp morning.

Yesterday morning, Rex had a sudden onset of swelling in all four limbs and not acting himself. We won’t have a definitive answer to what is going on until Monday evening. Keep this special boy in your heart and send him some positive jingles.

Huge shout out to Dr. Blotz and Chetek Veterinary Clinic for always taking such amazing care of our herd.

Third time’s the charm...

We are seeking a company to repair our old barn. It needs an entire side replaced (as shown) and a new roof. We haven’t had the best luck with straight forward contractors, so please, if it’s too big of a job or you’re too busy - tell us. We just want this barn finished before Winter, if at all possible.

Our Sanctuary herd goes through 4k + bales of hay each winter season. With our barn being complete we can adequately stock up as we currently receive loads weekly and store them in our small upper barn.

We can be reached at 715-642-5226 or via email at [email protected]
