We had another respectable banding day at Jubilee Farm last Wednesday capturing 34 birds (28 newly banded and 6 recaptures) of 16 species. Our season total stands at 330 birds captured (307 newly banded and 23 recaptures) of 52 species. It was nice to have Tracy visit/assist, as well as Fr. Michael! Many thanks to my regular assistants: Lee, Grace, Kayla, and Logan!
This Wednesday (11/9) will be our last banding day for the fall 2022 season. It sure has gone by quickly! We'd love to have you join us!
Finally getting our report out from last Wednesday at Jubilee Farm - we had a busy weekend at the IBBA meeting in Black Swamp!
Last Wednesday was a bit breezy, but also a very successful banding day! We captured 54 birds ( 53 newly banded and 1 recapture) of 16 species. This is our highest daily total so far this fall! It was a particularly good day for White-throated Sparrows as we captured/banded 27 of that species. Our season totals stand at 296 birds captured (279 newly banded and 17 recaptures) of 52 species. Many thanks to Sam, Lee, Grace, Frances and Kayla for their assistance!
We just have a couple of banding days left for the Fall 2022 season ... including this Wednesday.
Here is our final update from our migration banding at Jubilee Farm. From ba**er Tony Rothering:
We could not have asked for a better day (weather-wise) ... and the birds cooperated as well! For our last day of the Spring 2022 season, we caught 40 birds (24 newly banded and 16 recaptures) of 17 species. One of our recaptures was a Gray Catbird that we originally banded as an adult male on May 18, 2019. Gray Catbirds are neotropical migrants, which means that this bird has successfully made the migratory round trip to Central/South America at least 4 times! I am continuously amazed by the survivability and site fidelity of migratory bird species!! Many thanks to Grace and Gina who assisted me today!
From a season standpoint, we ended up capturing 358 birds this spring (291 newly banded and 67 recaptures) of 56 species. For comparison, last spring (2021) we captured 334 birds (287 newly banded and 47 recaptures) of 55 species. Our recapture rate for this spring was 19%. We are still creating our baseline for seasonal comparisons, but this is a relatively high recapture rate.
All 8 of our nets were productive this spring. I was very pleased with the success of our newly placed net (Net 9). That particular net was our highest producing net for the spring (17% of all bird captures). Our top 5 bird species by number captured were as follows - species (# captured): American Goldfinch (35), Common Yellowthroat (33), Gray Catbird (28), Song Sparrow (21), and Swamp Sparrow (20). Our cumulative, 3-season totals are as follows: 1,136 birds captured (991 newly banded and 145 recaptures) of 82 species.
I can't thank my banding assistants enough for all their early mornings, cold and hot temps, tick toleration, exciting (and often muddy) UTV rides, etc. I'm hoping they will all come back in the fall!!
Thanks also, Sr. Rose Marie, for your support and dedication to our efforts and to the conservation and restoration of Jubilee Farm. I truly believe our results are an indication that your hard work is paying off! We look forward to seeing you in August for the fall banding season!
Saturday proved to be another wonderful day of banding at the Jubilee Farm , and what a fun event in conjunction with the Illinois State Museum! We had a good number of visitors and the birds were plentiful as well! We ended up capturing 72 birds (60 newly banded and 12 recaptures) of 27 species. Our season totals stand at 318 birds captured (267 newly banded and 51 recaptures) of 54 species. We are only 16 birds away from surpassing last spring's total of 334 birds captured! We did add a new species to our cumulative station total (82 species): Blackpoll Warbler - a first for ba**er Tony Rothering! Many thanks to my assistants (Sam, Nancy, Andrea, Grace, Michelle, Meghann, and Margene) who were very busy checking nets, scribing, and talking with the visitors.
The boys out at Jubilee Farm got their summer haircuts yesterday and are ready to party this Sunday for the Spring Fling: Concert & Fun on the Farm with Tom Irwin.

🌟SPRING FLING AT Jubilee Farm IS RESCHEDULED FOR MAY 15🌟
Due to tomorrow's weather forecast, our sisters at Jubilee Farm decided it would be best to reschedule the Spring Fling for May 15 in hopes of better weather! Hope to see you all then!
The Roosters at Jubilee Farms today were spectacular!!! So friendly and colorful! What a great time!
The Peace Pole looked great today at Jubilee farms for Earth Day April 22, 2022. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Blessings Salo Stanley
"Kitty Jubilee" Photography Salo Stanley. Barb and I went for a walk to Jubilee Farms with the sisters of the land Dominican Sisters of Springfield Illinois. I brought my camera and caught the resident cat. We walked the labyrinth and said prayers for mother earth on earth day! Kitty Jubilee is about keeping the planet green, and tread lightly with our earth walk journey and be in the moment. What ya think? Blessings Salo Stanley
Shout out to Ordinary Zen Lutheran, for writing about Jubilee Farm and all it's wonders.
Don't forget to make Jubilee Farm part of your holiday shopping this year.
Tuesday proved to be our best day of the fall season at Jubilee Farm... so far. The weather conditions were almost ideal, cloudy skies and very little wind. We captured 57 birds (52 newly banded and 5 recaptures) of 16 species (see attached for details). We had at least 3 instances today of walking up to a net that had 10+ birds captured within! The high count was the 20 birds in Net 8 (bridge net), which included 14 Cedar Waxwings (13 were banded with 1 escapee)! It was quite exciting! Our season total stands at 414 birds captured (385 newly banded and 29 recaptures) of 62 species. We also did add 2 species to the cumulative station total (currently 78 species): Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Dark-eyed Junco. Ba**er Tony Rothering and his assistants, Grace Norris and Samantha Reif did a great job with the high volume of birds! They might need a raise ... or bring more donuts ... 🙂
Next Tuesday (11/16) will be our last banding day for the Fall 2021 season. We can only hope the results will be similar!!
Beautiful sunrise at Jubilee Farm, and the "birds" are watching us put up nets. Maybe next time buddy!
