Thankful reflections and discoveries.

As we begin the clean-up process and reflect on the great times our sale barn has hosted and the numerous professional and personal memories built there, I'd just like to say thank you again to everyone that has reached out and offered support.

I'd also like to offer a special thank you to those who helped "build" that place. First, I'd like to recognize the special group of people that literally helped our family physically build and improve the facility. There were many of you and I know you are feeling some of the same loss and sadness that we are.

We also greatly appreciate the larger group of family, friends, customers and professionals that have contributed to building that barn through the many events that its held over the years. We will never lose the memories and energy that you brought to us.

We're also excited to confirm that some old friends survived the fire. Both EXT and 878 made it out just ahead of the flames - right behind the semen tanks. I didn't know this until Saturday and want to again thank our crew for what they were able to save.

In addition, our barn cat Ranger showed up Saturday afternoon. We had some fear that in the confusion, he'd run back into the barn. Those of you that have met Ranger know that he's the best "dog" I've ever had. He's already adjusting to his new temporary management position at our house in Wentzville.

We are still sorting out the pathway to our sale on November 16th and are already optimistically looking forward to an improved FHCC Sale Barn version two at some point soon.

Today was a tough day at FHCC.

We typically savor summer days on the farm! Making hay, watching the calves grow, getting ready for county fairs and even taking sale photos are favorite activities.

Unfortunately this day was very different. I got the call mid-morning that our sale barn, office and bunkhouse was on fire.

Thankfully, everyone was able to get out safely.

The fire started in the machinery area of the building but very quickly engulfed the barn in flames and thick black smoke. Fast thinking and some pretty significant and brave action by our crew saved the semen and embryo tanks.

However, despite heroic efforts by the seven responding fire departments, the barn and most of the contents were a total loss.

We are so thankful tonight first of all for the fire crews that came to our aid and battled the fire in 100 degree heat for most of the day. We wish we had individual names but we'd like to extend our sincerest appreciation and thanks to the Central Callaway, New Bloomfield, Millersburg, Fulton, North Callaway, South Callaway and Holts Summit fire departments. Thank you for being there for us!!

A big thank you to our friends, family and crew for your efforts and dedication on a day that was not easy.

Finally, we'd also like to thank the many neighbors, friends and fellow cattlepeople that stopped by in person or reached out with a text or call to offer your assistance. We are humbled and very appreciative of your support.

November 16th isn't far away. We aren't exactly sure what the path will be between now and then but we remain committed to hosting our 13th annual Family Values Sale on that date. We hope you can be with us then. Thank You!
