Spring 2025 honey is ready! After completely selling out of honey a couple of weeks ago, we were excited to find a couple of hives with multiple boxes of capped honey ready to be extracted. Although our black locust trees are not in full bloom yet, our bees must have found it somewhere close by because the taste is evident in this batch of honey - it's delicious!

Due to today’s weather, the location of the Englewood market has changed to an indoor venue! The market will be held at Salem Church of the Brethren- 6037 Phillipsburg Union Rd, Englewood, OH 45322, from 10am to 2pm. It’s a perfect day to shop indoors with all of the vendors plus food trucks and live music! We’ll have what’s left of our 2024 honey as well as our ‘Englewood Market’ beehive that we’d love for you to help us decorate. Hope to see you there! See event link in the comments.

Less than 3 weeks from today will begin our 2025 market season! The first Englewood Market will be on Saturday, March 15th and we’re bringing this beehive so that you can help us with our own version of “Telling the Bees.” This old tradition involves honey bees being informed of significant events in the beekeeper’s life, including births, weddings, deaths, etc. I’ll link a couple articles in the comments if you’re interested in learning more. We would like you to help us ‘tell the bees’ about the Englewood Market by helping decorate this beehive. You can draw something, write your name, or color in one of the stenciled designs. Later this spring, we’ll add the decorated hive to our apiary and add a new colony of honeybees. Hope to see you on March 15th!

Happy snowy New Year! Here are a few photos of what our beehives look like in the winter. We wrap each hive with insulation and also add insulation to the hive top to help prevent condensation from forming and dripping onto the bees clustered below. The hive entrances remain open for ventilation and to allow the honeybees to come out for a ‘cleansing flight’ when the temperatures allow. Honeybees are very clean and tidy creatures and do not prefer to use the inside of their hive as a bathroom! Looking at the extended forecast, I don’t see any temperatures high enough for them to get out so I’m a bit concerned; usually they won’t come out unless it’s at least 40 degrees and sunny. Fingers crossed that they are warm and cozy inside and that they’ll make it through this long cold spell!

We'll be attending the Holiday Englewood Market this Saturday from 10am-2pm, our last market of the season! In addition to our usual seasonal honey selection, we'll also have a limited supply of small Santa bears and 9oz jars of infused honey- choose from cinnamon or vanilla. There are 70 vendors and 9 food trucks planning to attend this market- we hope to see you there!

Yesterday’s beautiful weather gave me a chance to go through most of the beehives to make sure they’re prepared for winter. To survive the winter, they will need a queen and plenty of stored nectar (carbohydrates for energy) and pollen (protein for brood production). In most hives, I did find the queen or at least evidence of her presence in the form of eggs, larva and capped brood. Most hives are full of nectar and pollen so it will soon be time to winterize the hives and take a break for the season. Take a look at what I found in the hives!

Our first batch of fall honey was extracted over the past few days and bottled this morning- just in time for the Englewood Market! The photo below shows this year's spring, summer and fall honey (from left to right) and even though the color difference is slight, each has a unique flavor. Come see us this evening to grab a bottle of this very fresh, local fall honey!

This week has been way too hot to do much outdoors- especially in a bee suit! We’ve been looking through our photos and while there are a lot that feature honeybees, we also enjoy finding and documenting other creatures around the farm. Check out the fun pollinators (and other animals) we’ve noticed around the property this summer!
