Due to difficulties, including the inability to get our EPA permits, we sadly do not anticipate being open for 2023.

We are trying to figure out the logistics of providing rental equipment and education resources for people to process on their own property if there is an interest, but right now, there isn't much more we can do.

As always, we appreciate the support and we are beyond disappointed that after so much time and resources poured into this, we may have been defeated.

I would like to take a minute to be thankful for all the people who we have met this year -- all the people who have taught us, encouraged us and supported us. We wouldn't be trying to press forward without you all.

Our permit application to install our water tank has been at the EPA office since mid-September with no word on its progress.

We have several other ideas as to how we can bring this service back to the area but we can't really do anything without the waste water approval...

So until then --- HAPPY THANKSGIVING !

This is an update I have been delaying.

Between the EPA being unrelenting and demanding we install a very costly waste water tank, lack of staff, and an immediate family member resuming the battle with an aggressive terminal cancer - sadly, we do not anticipate being able to take poultry appointments this year.

We are hoping to continue to reevaluate over the winter and move forward - potentially as a rental facility for those who are willing to butcher their own but lack equipment; an advisory/educational service for those who want to but need support; or some hybrid of many ideas that have been suggested to us by the community.

With your much appreciated and continued support - we will find a way to bring some level of much needed service back to this area but humbly ask for your prayers and patience while we figure it out.

The health department has determined that the EPA has jurisdiction -- so here we go again ! Hopefully a larger office with more experience with "industrial waste" means a more (insert POSITIVE adverb here) response.

No...really...for fun - insert your best PG-13 adverb ! Adverb with the most 😂's gets their choice of free chicken from my next batch of personal meat birds or a dozen eggs.

The Health Department is consulting with the EPA on who has jurisdiction over our property and operation. We are hoping this leads to a favorable interpretation of a code exemption that would allow us to use a small RV tank for our wastewater, enabling us to get really friendly with the folks at the travel center since we'd be there everyday to dump our process water - but if thats what it takes, we'll do it.

While we wait on that, we are working with our engineer and preparing to apply for the sewage variation needed to install a "temporary" 2000 gallon under ground holding tank. We then have to appear in front of the Board of Health to testify next week to get our sewage variance approved...Then we could apply for permits to install the tank before we could begin construction, which would in turn take a few weeks and is of course, weather dependent.

We are working with the ODA on what is required to rent our space and equipment or to offer classes that would enable you process your own poultry, since enough help to operate efficiently is still another continuing complication.

Sadly, this all means we are NOT taking poultry appointments for the remainder of August or September.

While we are STILL waiting on a response from the health department on our waste water, we are also struggling to find staff that would enable us to run a schedule that would meet the community needs and cover operating costs.

So we're using this wait to do some possible reevaluation of our business model and need some community input:

What discourages or prevents people from doing their own birds ? Is it time ? Knowledge ? Access to equipment ?

If you had access to good equipment and solid guidance, would you do your own ?

Would you participate in a member owned co-op where you help others and get help in return ?

We would like to wish all the 4-H participants heading out to the Clark Co. fair this weekend GOOD LUCK !

We are also looking for recommendations for septic services that may be able to transport 275 gallon totes to a water dump site for us. This would help us get open and processing while we work out our new permanent waste management solution.

"What goes in must come out".....

The "in" is good. Our water is certified clean, clear, and healthy.

The "out"...Not so much. We thought we had this all sorted out, but now our waste water management plan is being reviewed and we are finding out we may be subject to slew of very expensive permits and/or site modifications to meet EPA requirements. We are working with the Health Dept., Soil &Water, OSU, and industrial waste management companies to find the solution.

Because of this - we are still holding on appointments but doing everything we can to get this solved as soon as possible.

Does anyone know a good environmental or ag lawyer ? 🧐 (just joking...a little. That may be our next phone call.)

Well, well, well....Thats all we're waiting for ! Our well testing to ensure the water we're using is free of bacteria and safe for consumption. (Which it will be, because our family has been drinking it for years and no one has grown a 3rd arm...yet).

Once we get those results and a final walk through from the ODA regional supervisor - we will be taking appointments, just in time to take care of all the 4-H projects.

Employment Opportunity: We are looking to hire part time assistants on a flexible schedule with hours and pay increasing as business grows.

We can work around your family and/or other employment needs as long as you have a good work ethic and reliable transportation.

Some processing experience preferred.

Cross your feathers, July 11th is our scheduled facility inspection and license review with the Dept. of Agriculture !

We know everyone is very excited, but we have learned don't count your eggs before they're hatched as something always happens. (Perhaps we should change our name to "Murphy's Law Farm" ðŸĪŠ)

Just as soon as we know our license status - we will be scheduling for custom exempt/not for resale processing of chickens and turkeys.

We are really pushing to get everything signed off and approved to begin operating ASAP to take care of our hard working 4-H fair kids....and the rest of the community who has been so patient and supportive thus far.

*Quick update* The good news: There are 8 more red meat processors opening in our inspection district, meaning more availability for large animal processing. The bad news: This still puts the ODA at an inspector shortage for poultry. At this point, we have made the tough choice to open operations as custom exempt and do this until our production can justify the ODA getting a full time inspector trained for us. We know that there were several people looking for full/resale processing and while that is still our ultimate goal, we decided opening custom exempt is better than not opening this year at all. If you are in need of full inspection - please message us as we have a list of other processors that may be able to assist you.
