Our friends put up a deer stand which is also a really great place to sit and look at the orchard. This 5 acre field was once a corn field, and it's been really nice to see it come back to life after being completely stripped of topsoil and nutrients. Our trees are finally coming into their own, and the chestnuts, persimmons, and heartnuts are towering at 14-16' tall. The paw paws, plums, and pecans are catching up. The entrance is still lined with black walnut and butternuts, and we're nearly through this year's elderberry harvest. This fall, we'll plant 350 shrubs for cut flower and foliage production in the northeast corner. The entire west side is a meadow that we add plants to each year. Right now it's primarily goldenrod and mountain mint. Each year we have more and more diversity in plants and critters and it feels so nice to share this little oasis in a sea of corn and soybeans.

The universe has a way of reminding you that you are right where you need to be. It shows you your "why" and humbles you. This week I've been surrounded by some of the strongest women I know. Ones full of grit, determination, and tenderness. From the farmers who grew these stunning blooms to the incredible nurses and doctors at Barnes-Jewish Hospital - everyone came together to celebrate Trish Draege and Caelia Kyanite with the most intimate and genuine wedding ceremony and reception. It's such an honor to be able to be a piece of something so special.

First elderberry harvest of the year! This year we coppiced our most productive row with the goal of getting a higher yield of smaller heads that would hopefully ripen evenly and make harvesting much faster. Instead, the wild temp swings this spring really did some damage - they died back to the ground twice. Then, the deer ate them down daily. Now they're taller than me, but most of them didn't flower. We'll have significantly less berries than last year. Our other row looks good, and it is what I'm currently harvesting.

Has anyone coppiced elderberry at scale? What was your experience? Do you have any tips on managing production elderberries?

Forage informed! I know you're gonna do it, so keep yourself safe. Here's a quick comparison between Water Hemlock (a type of Poison Hemlock) and Queen Anne's Lace. Better yet, support a local flower farmer and skip the foraging.

TL;DR
✅ Queen Anne's Lace: fuzzy, hairy stems. Tiny purple flower in the center of the white flower.
❌ Water Hemlock or Poison Hemlock: Smooth reddish purple stems or reddish purple splotches on stems. No purple flowers in the center.

Other similar plants: Ammi, Cow Parsley, Angelica, Wild Parsnip - my advice is to look them up!!
