Itβs almost auction day. Saturday, March 28th starting at 9:00 am with small items. Real Estate and large items (tractor, equipment) will sell at 11:00 in person and online. Smaller items will finish afterwards. Part 2.
After 15 years growing and working the farm, we have decided that it is time to retire. We will be closing The Family Garden at the end of this month. There is an auction scheduled for Saturday, March 28th, with Mollett Auction Service. We will be selling the house, land, buildings, and equipment.
The farm has been a great opportunity for us. We have grown it into a good and profitable business, but unfortunately the grandkids live far away, and we are missing time with them. The farm has almost 6 acres, some in growing fields, some in pasture, and the house and yard. It has a 30' x 96' high tunnel, a walk in cooler, a tractor with loader and the implements needed to work the ground.
We have raised feeder calves, chickens, ducks, produce, mums and flowers to sell at the local farmer's markets. We are within an hour's drive of several thriving markets, with good demand for what we had to offer.
We hope that someone who wants to continue running the farm as a market garden will be interested in it. But if not, it would make a good hobby farm. It is fully fenced, with a possible opportunity to rent additional 5 acres next door (which we have done in the past). We lost the barn last year to snow load. The hoop style roof is gone but the walls are still there. I had hoped to put a greenhouse in that spot, so it has not been rebuilt. The house is 100+years old, and needs some work, but is certainly livable. It sits on the edge of a small village, with public water and sewer available, and a well for the farm use. It is about a five minute drive from the interstate, and 45 minutes from St. Louis Mo, and Springfield IL.
